Roger Williams Park Zoo Roger Williams Park Zoo News 2020

Sasha the Zoos resident Dromedary Camel has passed away as of September 2020. The zoo has no plans to add new camels to the Marco Polo Trail. Tigers were always planned to be the animal to replace their exhibit.
Does anyone know if there have been any updates or rumors on a potential camel replacement?

They aren't gonna replace the camel, from what I've heard they have no intention to replace rather when all of the camels have passed they will turn it into a tiger exhibit.
That was the final camel. I knew they weren't planning on getting another camel but was wondering if they were doing something else with that space. I highly, highly doubt (although I hope I'm wrong) that the zoo has enough funding for the Tiger project, that wasn't supposed to happen for at least 10 years (it was phase 3 of masterplan- haven't even finished phase 1 yet). I hope whatever they do they get some sort of animal and don't overly rush the Tiger project. If they are going to get tigers, which I have no problem with, they do it right and on par with other top Tiger exhibits.

And that's the thing about Master Plans: conditions change and a project that was scheduled for the future gets moved up. (I have no idea what the zoo is planning but the phasing of the plan would not lock them into anything if a new pressing opportunity arose)

I'm also a little confused about whether or not the new Tiger exhibit still makes sense. The current asiatic black bear exhibit, which the masterplan still has as the bears, would make an excellent Tiger exhibit with minimal renovations once the bears die. Asiatic black bears are an AZA phase out species, so I can say with confidence that I do not believe they will be getting more Asiatic black bears. It might be a better plan to put Tigers in that Exhibit and turn the camel one into some sort of other Asian animal- Persian Onager, Przewalski's Wild Horse, Transcapian Urial, Chinese Central Goral, Gaur, and Sarus Crane all come to mind as possibilities. With some bigger renovations, I could also see dhole working.

I think they should add another species to the Red Crowned Crane exhibit. Maybe like the Sarus Crane or a smaller mammal

IIRC they had sarus cranes in the Marco Polo Trail originally, though don't quote me on that.
My personal optimal lineup for the Marco Polo Trail would be the following:

Medium sized yard with rocks and light foliage:
Dromedary camel
Large sized rotational fenced-in and forested yards, with a fallen pine tree acting as an overhead crossing from the next exhibit on the list: Amur tiger/Sloth bear (multiple yards for rotating)
Large-sized yard with underwater viewing: Amur tiger/sloth bear
Netted over ravine with undergrowth and tall trees: Sarus crane
Netted over hillside with rocky cliffs, talus slopes and switchbacks: Snow leopard
Ravine with eye-level climbing structure meant to simulate a Chinese hemlock tree: Red panda (perhaps rotates with a binturong?)
Rocky hillside with talus slopes and switchbacks: Sichuan takin, argali (or goral or Himalayan tahr)
Lush aviary with babbling brook and mist: Chinese hwamei, white-rumped shama, Mandarin duck, Temminck's tragopan
Netted over habitat with running stream, climbing structures and lush foliage: Francois langur (rotating with white-cheeked gibbons)

Where does the current masterplan stage stand now?

They are still in the first masterplan phase. Faces of the Rainforest was completed (although no Maned wolves), and the next project is supposed to be a new education center, followed by renovating the old one into a reptile house.
