Roger Williams Park Zoo Roger Williams Park Zoo News

Went to the zoo today. Red River Hogs were on display. Today was actually their first day together on display. I believe they first went on display last Thursday. Red Pandas had a new climbing structure in their exhibit. They were building a new climbing structure in the Moon Bear exhibit. Also, they are working on an indoor area with pool for their Chinese Alligators.

Anyone know where they plan to squeeze the tigers into in Marco Polo Trail? Between the Camels and Red-Crowned Cranes (if so then they should either lower the viewing platform or raise the exhibits because no one wants to only see the heads and backs of tigers and cranes). I would, personally, like to see either Bengals or Indochinese Tigers go on exhibit somewhere in New England (something besides all the Amurs). Mabye Beardsley sould give RWPZ their Amurs, build a new tiger exhibit, and bring in a smaller subspecies.

Do they plan on moving the Pronghorn with the Bison and adding the Moose into their current exhibit? And, are they still bringing in the Arctic Fox? I know they were planning on it when they were still thinking of building the Polar Bear exhibit.

What new animals will be in the New England exhibit (White-Tailed Deer? Red Fox? American Black Bear? Coyote? Fisher? Beaver? Bobcat?)? Are they going to put some of their New England Cottontails on exhibit finally?:D

First off, Franklin Park has Bengals (Not true Bengals of course) on exhibit.
Okay to answer the New England question: They plan to put Porcupines, Wild Turkeys, Lynx, River Otters, Great Horned Owls, and more.

Thank you.
How come, it seems, there are no pure Bengal Tigers in North America. There have to be some.

Aren't white tigers a color morph of Bengals?

@Thylacine- From what I heard, they may demolish the Marco Polo plaza entrance and put the tiger exhibit there. The pronghorn will probably stay where they are and they may get rid of the bison for the moose to take their place.

Hmm. I can see the whole tiger exhibit deal but I'd just move the Pronghorn with the Bison, there's room, and put the Moose in the Pronghorn exhibit.
I hope everyone there is safe and all the animals (both wild and captive) are ok. I'm sure the wild ones can take pretty good care of themselves, though.

I hope they do not put the Tiger Exhibit in the location of MP Plaza. It would make it one of the smaller Tiger Exhibits if they were to do that. Ideally, if they want to do Tigers, they should build two exhibits. It's sad they cut down all those trees for the now cancelled Polar Bear Exhibit, as well as the trees in the Takin Exhibit, as that would have provided some nice cover. It will be interesting to see what they do for the Tiger Exhibit. There's a service road behind Crane, Red Panda, Takin and the Hospital. Leaving them with limited possibilities for a Tiger Exhibit location. Someone had mentioned using the Camel Yard and opposite Black Bear, but that seems small as well. There's a major grade change after MPT, between Otter, Eagle, Wolf, Bison and Pronghorn. It would be nice if they were to incorporate the Tiger Exhibit into the Otter and Pronghorn area. Lots of space and different viewing opportunities.

During the Green Anaconda's annual physical, minor renovations were made to the interior of her exhibit to make her more visible.

I just found a video on Facebook that shows that there is an Asian Brown Tortoise living in the Tropical America building with Red-Footed Tortoises. RWPZ has always been somewhat bad when it comes to where some animals are placed (Asian Brown Tortoises in Tropical America, Radiated Tortoises in Australasia, Reeve's Muntjacs in North America).

From the zoo's Facebook-
"Earlier this year we asked you to help us bring a new yard to the zebra and wildebeest - and you did! This winter we were able to fix the drainage issues in their yard, and give them an exhibit they deserve and need. Thank you again for helping us bring them, and you, a better Zoo! We couldn't have done it without the wonderful support of our donors."
