Roger Williams Park Zoo Roger Williams Park Zoo News

1,000,000 is a big jump from 600,000. That's if all goes as planned and there are no overages on material, labour, etc. Phase 1 is the Tropics, Education and Reptile conversion. One of those will get shorted as the other two will probably run over. The Tropics isn't even that big. At 10,000 square feet, once holding, mechanicals, visitor paths and areas, good chunk is gone. It'll be experience differently due to natural light and open feel, but it's still small. It will either be a quick walk-thru with the illusion of more due to winding paths. Or it can get crowded easily.

Also, it's odd that they would build a new Roo/ Wallaby walk through behind the Australasia building since they just built a new one last year???

It appears the Reptile House will only have komodo dragons and crocodiles.

No, there are two larger exhibits across from Komodo and Crocodylian. Behind the other two exhibits is a keeper work area and access to fourteen other smaller terraria.

The walkabout displacing the Australasia animals is disheartening. As is the old Polar holding, Wallaby and Gibbon for a tent area for the restaurant.

The current mish-mash, southwick's-style Outback resides where the new Tropical Building is slated for.

This is an article with a video about the zoo's master plan.

Plan for Roger Williams Park Zoo includes Rainforest, new animal - News, Weather and Classifieds for Southern New England

It is unlike other articles because it shows actual blueprints for the new buildings.

It appears the Reptile House will only have komodo dragons and crocodiles.

Please remember that a Master Plan is about planning, not designing. The images are to help the zoo, donors, state officials, etc. get a feeling for what is planned. They are not designs for the new exhibits. In reality, if and when exhibits from a Master Plan are built they usually look little like the initial renderings.

Cats out of the bag. Four female Cheetah will be getting used to their exhibit (Wild Dog) for the next month.

Why all females?

Why not? It depends on what the Zoo has the ability to hold and what the SSP needs to move to free up space. Not every situation is 1.1 where they aim to breed. Sometimes it's just a derp (google it) situation. Closest place to see Wild Dogs is now Bronx. RWPZ is the only AZA Zoo with Cheetah you can visit in New England. If you want to see Cheetah in a carney setting, go to Southwick's.

It's been a while since I last saw this enclosure and I know there are plans to expand it a bit but is this space really big enough for four Cheetahs?

~Thylo:cool:

Just to clarify the "carney" setting, Southwick's cheetah exhibit is 2 to 3 times the size of RWPZ's exhibit for only 2 cheetah...not 4.

I agree. Also, the advantage of having Cubs is that visitors get more excited about the exhibit and the mom is more active and it's cooler to watch. This exhibit should be good though since big cats are active in the morning and it's near the zoo entrance so when people arrive early they will be doing stuff.

Saw this in the zoo's news email, for anyone with questions:

As some visitors may have noticed, the seal exhibit has been closed. During regular maintenance some larger repair issues arose, so the exhibit will be closed until further notice and Seal Encounters have been cancelled for the season. We apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your continued support and understanding.

Are the seals just off exhibit or have they been sent to another facility? Also, they have/had seal encounters? I never knew! Is this a recent institution or has it been around longer?

It sounds like they are away temporarily. They want to make a new seal and sea lion exhibit near the entrance in the masterplan, but that is for a later stage, so thats not whats happening right now. It will probably happen in around 7 years (probably).

I don't know how long they have had seal encounters. I think its a lot like giraffe feeding, but for seals (obviously for seals) . You also get to talk to the keepers I think. I would give more precise information, but that part of their website is down since the seal area is being repaired.

Most likely, they are currently changing from a freshwater to saltwater pool.
