On January 29th, it was announced that Ryan Vanzant is the zoo's newest executive director, succeeding the previous director, Bob Jenkins. He started serving the role on February 1st, 2021.

On March 5th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) red-necked wallaby has made its first appearance. The wallaby is estimated to be born during August-October 2020. On June 25th, the zoo announced the wallaby was female, and her name was Rosemary.

On April 2nd, the zoo announced that (0.0.4) red-eyed tree frogs have been acquired and are on exhibit in the Reptile Building.

On April 9th, the zoo announced the (1.0) scimitar-horned oryx now has a name, Neelix.

On April 30th, the zoo announced they have acquired (2.3) Chilean flamingos from the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas and will be available for viewing right across the existing Flamingo building. On July 13th, the public voted that the flamingos should be named after the cast from the Big Bang Theory.

On June 9th, the zoo announced the death of a (1.0) 33-year-old greater one-horned rhino named Joya. He was the oldest male greater one-horned rhino that was a part of the AZA's SSP and he passed due to age-relating issues.

On July 16th, the zoo announced that a (0.0.1) red-necked wallaby has been born between December 2020 and January 2021.

On December 16th, the zoo announced that some of the buildings on the outlying of the zoo were damaged due to high winds on December 15th. No animals or staff were injured, however, several staff cars were.

On January 25th, 2022, the zoo posted an update to the construction to the Pride of the Prairie exhibit. The below-ground infrastructure and the immersive cave's towering framing structure have been installed, as well as the floor for the second African lion's indoor habitat.
