Rostov Zoo Rostov Zoo

ДОН24 - Уходу за ней обучили Запашного: родившуюся в Ростове слониху передали московскому цирку
Menacing news. Elephant calf Ekol was separated from her mother and sister and moved to the Big Moscow State Circus. She lives here alone. That's really awful. I think that elephants should not be bred in Russia at all if they want to put young elephants in a circus. Can EEP take action against it?

Слониха Эколь из Ростовского зоопарка переехала в московский цирк
Here is another article about Ekol. They say that Yoma has lived separately from the others so far, but now he will live with the others. (probably to get Cinta pregnant again) And that could lead to Ekol breed with Yoma. So they preferred to move her. It is possible that Ekol could get pregnant (her mother had her first calf at the age of five), but I find it very stupid. Although the zoo claims that the circus has good conditions for animals and will build an enclosure with a pool for Ekol, it is still a circus where it will do unnatural tricks and, most importantly, be alone. And I don't understand at all why Rostov is afraid of inbreeding, when their whole breeding is inbreeding. Cinta is Yoma's half-sister, but also not only Sitara's mother, but also her half-sister. They are all half-siblings of all. They have a common father, Ankhor. They should have exchanged bulls with the Moscow Zoo. It would benefit both. Rostov would no longer have a related bull, and Moscow could breed Pobeda.

Yoma coud mate with Sitara as well, and it would take Ekol several years to mature. The zoo director just needed money in a coronavirus crisis.
It reminds me of Odessa zoo elephant calf, Duke, that was sold in 2005 to an Ukrainian circus at the age of 1 and died.

All well and good about the money, but the sale of an elephant on loan is a serious breach of EAZA animal transfer policies. It underlines that the Rostov Zoo is not fit to be part of the international conservation breeding zoo community.

The exchange of bulls between Rostov & Moscow is even less likely than return of Ekol. Pamir is quite old and attached to his family, and probably won't enter the crate.

Директор ростовского зоопарка ответил на критику ЕАЗА из-за передачи слона в цирк
The zoo director responded to the criticism. The deal with Moscow circus was set up in 2019, when the zoo was not yet EAZA membership candidate. The circus handed over some chimpanzees to the zoo (I imagine they have behaviour problems) and was going to exchange some more animals (which? Some goddamn inbred big cats?) but it did not happen, so instead the zoo sold the elephant.
Previous decision was finding Ekol a new home at another zoo, but "either no zoos wanted her or didn't have required conditions." Kazan zoo refused because they're going to get Africans. Many circuses offered to take the elephant, including Italian one, and Moscow State Circus was chosen because it's stationary. They promised to build indoor & outdoor enclosures. The zoo director trusts the circus, says it has the best husbandry possible, and that he feels no shame.
In Russia, cooperation between zoos & circuses is accepted as normal, and the director doesn't want to have Ecol returned, because it means paying forfeits, returning chimps and finding a new home for her again, since it's not possible to keep her with her father (What's about Sitara you bastard!!!). And instead of Ekol "a wild elephant would have been acquired by circus" (that's illegal but he doesn't have enough education to know it).
Also he says that this is a Force Majeure situation and he hopes EAZA understands his position, and "common sense would prevail".
Btw his surname is Zhadobin, originating from Russian word "zhadoba", which means "greedy one".

You can see the stupidity of the Rostov Zoo here. I have no idea why they wanted to separate her from her family. They should have replaced the bull a long time ago, because it is inbreeding. I don't think Pamir is old, but there are certainly other options. There are many young bulls in Europe and they are starting to be redundant. It could be solved much better.

In 2019 they got 2 male Bornean orangutans, Caesar from Kaliningrad and Kiran from Bojnice. Why 2 males?!
Here is a pic & video of exhibit:

They way I and probably EAZA see it the elephants have been sent on loan basis to Rostov Zoo in the first place. It is not the decision of the zoo to sell off stock they do not even own, lest it is unthinkable in modern age animal transaction policy in cooperative and regional zoo organisations. On top of that it is the basic principle for animal transfers that no money changes hands for animals. It is a total no go and hence no-brainer. Obviously, the Rostov Zoo director is now in very hot water and potentially EAZA/EEP could even revoke not just their candidate membership as well as have all elephants out on loan returned to EEP lenders.
