Rotterdam Zoo Rotterdam Zoos Future Plans...

I haven't heard anything about a temporary closure of this entrance at all. This old entrance will be open at all times as usual. So that shouldn't be a problem for you.
A lot of people still use this entrance (like me ;)), especially the ones comming to the zoo by public transport, because this entrance is closer to the train station.
 
If I arrive by train, I always enter through the old entrance indeed, the last times I visited Blijdorp I entered through the new entrance, because I arrived by car that times.
 
Are there any white-crowned mangabeys kept in Blijdorp? I know that they have had one single male, regarding to ISIS they do not keep this species, but regarding to website ZootierlisteHomepage, they will get two females from Dublin zoo, could anyone confirm this information? Will they really get Cuvier's gazelles from Almeria? Thank you for your reply
 
The only male they had died recently (last December). What will happen to the two females is not sure at this moment. I didn't hear they already arrived in Rotterdam. It's possible that they will go to another zoo.
 
I would have one question yet, is it possible to see greater galagos in Blijdorp, or do they live only behind the scenes?
 
An update on buildingsite africa;
(sorry it took so long, but i was out of the country for a couple of months. Working, not holliday ;))

Kudu-enclosure has "new" fences. These will disappear in the future. This site will be part of the giraffe-savanna

the giraffehouse. The house is completed, the yard not quite but it's getting there. Sand, rocks etc are present, now they just have to be put in the right place ;)

Next to the giraffehouse is the "baobab". Visitors will be able to climb this tree. And the general path will go through it.

Fences around the current mhorrgazelle-enclosure changed. Higher. Probably because the gazelles will switch places with the kudus. Because the current kudu-enclosure will become part of the savanna and kudus will only later be introduced to the savanna (or not at all? who knows...), these species will switch places.

Yesterday a new male giraffe arrived from Dvur. (Probably Banio). He is in the new giraffehouse for his quarantaine. After that period the group will join his there.

I don't have any new shots of the polar-area, because i diddn't think those enclosures were worth the trouble. They're not that spectacular. a lot of fences... Snowy owls, stellers eagles and polarfoxes have enclosures here now as well. I don't know what is going to happen to the plan of snowhare, lemming and racoon. Maybe later, maybe not?

The savanna is due to open the 8th. The baobab is only scheduled for fall.
 
Giraffes are now outside in the new enclosure. They live together with the kudus. Later the mhorrs will be added.
 
The official opening was the 8th, but i've heared that the animals were outside one or 2 days in advance. Probably to get them used to the new surroundings before the big opening. Anyway, the're visible now!

On the left you see a small part of a white roof. Thats from the henri Martin house (vet). On the right in the picture is the baobab and the giraffe house. The house with the red roof is the stable for kudus and gazelles.
Giraffes and kudus can use the grassy part. Only the kudus can use the bit behind the row of rocks, the sandy part.
When you look across the water there is another enclosure, thats for the zebras and ostriches. Between the zebras and henri martin house 2 enclosures are going to be build. One for colobus monkeys and one for servals.

They put the net only 3 m high on the tree trunks. There will be some very happy giraffes and very dead trees!

Small and interesting detail next door. In the nile crocodile tank, several families of tilapia don't just survive but breed. They have fry going out and in their mouth.
 
I don´t think the trees will die soon. In their previous enclosure the giraffes had some shrubs in the middle as well, but i never saw them stripping the bark of. Just eating some leaves. That shouldn´t be to destructive on the trees.

The cichlids have been breeding from the start ever since they were put in there. It just that they are bigger now that people start to notice them. Just like the 3 tigerfish in the tank (Hydrocynus sp.)

You can visit the "room""of the old crocodile-enclosures at the rivierahal again. They filled the pits with dirt and planted some more tropical plants. For now its a walkthrough aviary for the bird that were in there before (turakos, mousebirds etc). (I think its a temporary solution until the whole building is being redone)

Along the wooden savanna walkway the hyena-enclosure is being constructed.

The penguins made way for the reconstruction of a shop that used to be their in the early days. There were 29 penguins left (Jackass). they all went to Artis-Amsterdam.
The meerkats were in the wrong location in the zoo. That area is destined to become europe (or australia depending on where exactly they draw the line). A new enclosure for the meerkats will be made near the new giraffehouse. For now the meerkats will live in the old cat-gallery (backside of the lion/hyena-house).
