Rotterdam Zoo Rotterdam Zoos Future Plans...

Guess i must have seen an immaginary parma wallaby then :p. Will the bisons leave Blijdorp, og will they be kept as well as musk oxen and beavers?

I´m not sure what they plan on doing.. First there were planns of combining bison and musk oxen, now they said musk oxen will come at the bisonplace as if the bison will leave.. I´m afraid we´ll have to wait and see to be sure of what they mean :)

The greys left, and parma were never there ;) They still have Red and agile? (Macropus rufus and Macropus agilis). In a small zoo in the netherlands (dierenpark wissel in Epe) is making an enclosure where they will keep agilis, so i think eventually the blijdorp group of agilis will move there. But for now blijdorp has 2 species left.

My thought was that Blijdorp's Sand(or agile-)wallaby group was so large that they would never fit in their new, smaller exhibit and that they would therefore split up the group. The new exhibit in Epe would also be too small to exhibit the complete Blijdorp group together with the Tammar's they keep at the moment (and announced that stayed).

So i think Wissel will get about halve of them, and Blijdorp will keep the rest (perhaps either one will keep males only...?). Then again, your guess is at good as mine...

Yeah its all speculation. I guess, eventually the kangaroos will have to leave blijdorp completely because their "new" enclosure is in the future europe section and australia isn't planned all together. (except for the possibility/rumour that austalia will be build at the flamingo-site when the rest of the park is done)

Thanks for the photos :)

Will the hyenas get a new enclosure by the savannah as well? And what is the H.M.huis currently being used for?

There is another drawing of a future map and there it is clear that a hyena-enclosure will arise along the railwaytrack. So this pic that is at the top middle in the green triangle where it says "verblijf".

The h.m house (Herni Martin house) is now the vet/clinic. (you can also visit that, and with a lot of luck you're able to see an operation). This house used to be the building for noctural animals and some monkeys.
(between the hm house and the railwaytrack there is a stable for surpluss animals (mainly hoofstock) On the map it says "surplusstal" just right of where the hyenas will come.

Thanks Trebaruna :)

Will the Herni Martin house stay there long-term, or will it be torn dow at some point? If the zoo plans to make Africa look as cool as Asia, the Herni Martin house just doesn't fit into the theme.

And how much more Africa will need to be built, when the giraffes and hyenas are in place?

The Henri Martin House has been remodelled some years back to become the modern veterinary hospital of Diergaarde Blijdorp. It is start of the art technology and with a visual allowing the public a window on what the vets are up to in the operating theatre and lab rooms.

With the giraffe/mhorr gazelle and hyaena exhibit, savannah pavillion with crocs, repts, birds and several mammalians, the only African projects still in the pipeline are:
a) the okapi, bongo and bush pig relocation out of their current location to the eastern side of the Riviera Hall (now being fully renovated in phases) to become the Congo theme with gorilla island and all.
b) the siting of a new lion enclosure (but the current lions are now Asians, allthough pure-bred African subspecies were intended)
c) the relocation of the Saharan exhibit with addax (due to stay as Rotterdam is part of the Sahelo Saharan antelope group reintroducing them back to North Africa (with the mhorrs).
d) the erection of a vulture aviary (possibly encompassing the marabou stork habitat ... and the African crowned crane exhibit.

The major bottleneck is the Asian projects still in the pipeline as we speak (most are envisaged 2010 and onwards till 2014):
aa) new Orang Utan exhibit (possible location: part Taman Indah with the Malayan tapirs relocating to the lake shore area in a totally new exhibit).
bb) Himalayan themed exhibit with takins, snow leopards and an E Asian monkey species (I believe yet to be decided).

d) the erection of a vulture aviary (possibly encompassing the marabou stork habitat ... and the African crowned crane exhibit.
the "possibly" is a "for sure" ;) Recently blijdorp received quite a number of Gyps ruepelli and Necrosyrtes monachus vultures that will be kept in an aviary at the left of the henri-martin house (left on the pic above). Now there is an enclosure for marabu and southern crowned cranes. The marabu will be put in with the new vultures. I'm not sure what is going to happen tot the cranes.

Apart from these bigger animals/projects some of the birds etc will be integrated into the future projects.

The savannahouse that is now being build (the one for the crocs) will get klipspringer, hyraxen, elefantshrews, carmine bee-eaters, and probably some small reptiles, etc.

"Africa" will also get a new enclosoure for the meerkats (now being near the old entrance) and an enclosoure for the jackasspenguins.

(the herni martin house will not be demolished as it is a monumental building.)

Three late additions: :p
e) jackass penguin exhibit (thanks to Trebaruna)
f) the hippo pools (next to the HM House .....). Now somewhat questionable :(
g) the Madagascar zone.

You can forget about "f". That is now being made into a hyena-enclosure. I don't think they will demolish that in a couple of years to build a hippopool.

I wonder if there is every going to be a madagascar. That was once planned in a big baobab next to the kudu-stable, but that one is not going to be build. A baobab is now going to arise next to the railway track and will house the hyenas... But i hope they will make madagascar somewhere, it could inhabit such interesting species.

(i was in blijdorp this morning and still no sign of constuction for the serval/collobus.)

Funnily enough, they took quotes from the dutch zoosite (which where all positive) as commercial back-up of their work (they linked to the site, all very decent!).

Now they can add international acclaim! :)
