There are two relevant posts - an announcement of the birth, which occured last autumn, along with photographs of the mother and cubs, and a more up-to-date photo of the cubs at 7 weeks old.

The wording of the announcement also suggests they are the Sumatran - and nominate - subspecies of the civet. If accurate, this might actually make the reference to a European first breeding accurate too, as the ssp status of prior specimens was never determined.

I was just about to report this news! :D Great news, a shame the collection is no longer open. Lovely little beasties! :p

Have to agree, sadly what happens there is pretty irrelevant, unless of course the species are transferred elsewhere later, as has been the case for some other species

I would beg to differ; with species like this any breeding success, even in a private collection, is dearly desired - the only hope of improvement in our knowledge of how to keep and breed threatened species is for someone to attempt to do so, after all.

is this all real or has someone been messing around with ZTL? thanks
 
All very exciting if correct . Looking at species detail it says against them - personal contact 20.01.2013 by zg . Wonder who that could be then ?
 
well since WWP went out of the bamboo lemurs i can see them going back
the African civets could have come from a private breeder ( remember: Todd Dalton was one ;) )
and the bear cuscus could have come from the Philippine company which the center works with.

No mention of the tarsiers? I thought that Al had confirmed the centre holds them? :confused:

All the spoecies on the list are at the RSCC.

Well, the mommy and daddy Saki first have to really love each other... Unless mommy Saki has had too much to drink, then she blames daddy Saki for taking advantage of the situation, and then they leave it for the courts to decide.

Well if its wrong I'm not going to believe the source ever again,but lets just say if the source is wrong they don't know what they have in their own collection!!!
 
Would be good if the black sakis are a fresh importation as , with Belfast breeding them , new blood will be needed . Similarly new blood would be welcome with the otters , with the original RSCC pair breeding well .
 
Re the Black Sakis - are we talking about the red-backed bearded here or the actual black saki ? If the latter then that would be something pretty amazing ...

Wingham have recently acquired a male smooth coated otter.
Apparently he's the first unrelated male to enter the country since 2009. Are Wingham's females related to those at RSCC?

Afaik, the Colchester group were orginally from RSCC. They bred at RSCC and Colchester but I think a female Smooth Coated Otter was hand reared at RSCC.
