I was unable to post a relpy as this thread has now been closed. So I thought I'd start a new thread here to discuss what could possibly be a very exciting new developement for Colchester Zoo.

Goretex posted "On the Primate evening I got told that the old bear cages now housing Capuchins (of which me and my mum were the first people to see them when they first arrived from Chester) and injured Cherry Crowned Mangabys? Is going to be redeveloped into an Austrailain exhibit. I've got no idea what will be in them."

First of all its about time they redeveloped the old bear cages and secondly this could possibly mean some new interesting species arriving at Colchester.

How easy would it be for the zoo to get echidnas, tree kangeroos or even wombats?

What would everyone like to see in the new exhibit?

Which ones are the old bear enclosures?

Do you mean where the Capuchins are now, in the Aquatic zone?

The Capuchins are due to move to the tropical house, and the enclosure opposite is seemingly temporary accommodation at the moment, so something may well happen there.

Surely if there was to be a new Australian exhibit, it would be based around the new wallaby walkabout enclosure?
Why build 2 related exhibits so far apart from each other in the zoo?

Yes. There are two similar enclosures next to each other which held Syrian and Himalayan bears up until the mid to late 90's, they are between the sealion and penguin pools.

It would make sense to have an austrailain enclosure next to the wallaby walk through but I guess they have to make the best use of the space they have.

I see those were big words:eek:. I only reported what got said. To be honest I can't really think what else they could use for that area.

But maybe there are no definite plans yet but they think thats the most likely?

Anyway it won't be until the new tropical exhibit is built for the Capuchins for them to use that area. So we'll have to wait for at least a couple of years for this new exhibit to be up and running.

Well for the Echidna`s and Wombats I would say their is more chance of it Snowing all the way round the Equator, but I could be very wrong but I don`t think I will be as both species do not show very well in zoo exhibits due to the fact they are mainly nocturnal.
Tree Kangaroo`s is possible but again don`t think there are on surplus at the moment,I actually think they have more chance of getting Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby.

Possible but I`m not sure how much Colchester would like been told how they have got to build the enclosure,to keep them as is the case with every zoo that gets them,in Europe.

Well, we know they wouldn't moan about them having to be behind glass...

I'm sure San Diego would let them have a little bit of mock rock to keep them happy!

Again, though, I'm not sure if there's any surplus in Europe at the moment, so would probably have to import intercontinentally if they were going for Koalas. Can't see it happening, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong.

Are there any serious plans on this???

If anyone knows a bit more about what will be used for this area then PLEASE SAY!!!;)
