Sad end for amazing animals - giant tortoise deaths on NT land near Exeter UK

Yes indeed if he is convicted.

Have to say good work by the Police investigating it.

It’s such a shame - why wouldn’t someone ask for help vs letting 10 colossal and rare tortoises die and then trying to conceal them. Cruelty and idiocy in equal measure.
This may also be of interest . Paul Rose, founder of Barrow Owl Sanctuary which was raided by police and the RSPCA in March 2022 was in Preston Crown Court last week. He was handed a 20 week jail sentence, suspended for 2 years and banned from keeping birds for 5 years. He admitted to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to two Tawny Owls and one offence of failing to ensure the welfare of a Barn Owl. The birds were euthanised. It occurred me that the way things are going ,a thread could be created just for these cases of cruelty

Terrible. Good to see these cases coming to court though and being pursued as that is the positive part of the news. And there are more good actors than bad ones. But it’s shocking and sad to read about people neglecting animals when they should be caring for them. Such amazing owls you'd think the privilege of being able to care for them would incentivise great treatment by itself.

One of my friends is convinced his neighbour has a tawny owl locked up in his shed which apparently never goes outside and the only evidence of its existence is it hooting throughout the day.

It makes me wonder how people owning owls and BOP aren't caring for these birds nor letting them fly. Having the know how on how to practise falconry successfully is a skill in itself and nothing is better than watching these birds fly.

After the Chernobyl disaster, there was a real concern with regard to the future of European birds of prey. A sustained breeding programme was set up in the UK to breed certain birds of prey with the positive outcome of releasing these birds back into the countryside in certain designated areas.I was involved in this very worthwhile project and personally bred forty-nine Barn Owls, which were successfully released. Yes,I agree birds of prey are incredible!

That's fantastic! How lovely to have been part of something like that.

It actually got better. A South African film company contacted me to ask if they could come to my house (where my Barn Owls were housed)to interview me and film the birds. Obviously, I agreed. John Varty and his film crew were already in the UK, so we agreed a date and they came and interviewed me, with my son, who was 6years old. My wife was kept busy making drinks, it was very exciting .Unfortunately the film of the interview was only shown in South Africa. I had a video of it ,but unfortunately lost it in a house move.

Gary Priddle,an electrician, who kept more than 50 tortoises had left the animals alone over the Christmas period during which time the heat lamp over them failed.
He received a community order, including 50 hours of unpaid work and banned from keeping tortoises for 10 years. All of his other tortoises have been found new homes. PMs found that the tortoises had died from metabolic bone disease, linked to poor husbandry as well as a lack of proper heating during one of the coldest periods of the year. AND HE IS AN ELECTRICIAN!!!

Sad that he might keep other animals. Just remains a pity all round for something so unnecessary but at least the other tortoises were rehomed.

Its strange how he dumped them in Ashclyst Forest in East Devon and not somewhere more remote. Its well used by walkers so not the best place to ensure they wouldn't be discovered. Odd choice really and not very well thought out.
