This will reflect poorly on all zoos as far as the general public is concerned. It needs dealing with.
This, I feel, is *the* pivotal point.......

I absolutely agree, the councils decision on the 6th is crucial , with mounting pressure from the national media now, and both CAPS and the BFF getting involved I think the odds are becoming stacked against the place. Even without Gill I think it would take a huge amount of effort to revert the situation now. This, I feel, is *the* pivotal point.......
Rather silly comment piece in the Guardian today, based off the South Lakes situation:
Zoos shouldn’t be jails – let’s reimagine them and enjoy animals in the wild | Jules Howard

hi

Well she is a vet in her native country, but I believe in the UK her qualifications are what would be required for a veterinary nurse.hi

i doubt that would bother her husband if he needed something doing and kept hushed upWell she is a vet in her native country, but I believe in the UK her qualifications are what would be required for a veterinary nurse.
I have just posted this comment below the article in the Guradian.
A perfect world would not need zoos: neither would it need The Guardian.
This is not a perfect world. We need zoos, but we need good zoos because they play their part in protecting the natural world in ways that no other institutions can. I have been visiting zoos for nearly 60 years and I have seen the immense progress that has been made in improving the health and welfare of zoo animals in that time. Moreover the front-line conservation work that zoos fund and support has become of major importance all round the world.
I respect the views of people who do not wish to visit zoos, but some of the comments here are just unreal. Tales of throwing buns at elephants are as relevant to zoos today as laughing at the inmates of Bedlam are to psychiatric hospitals. Likewise there are almost no captured wild animals in British zoos today: the vast majority were born and bred in these very zoos.
On the other hand, I have no hesitation in condemning bad zoos. I have chosen never to visit South Lakes, because I have been horrified by some things I have heard about it. The latest report shows that Barrow Borough Council has been far too lenient with its zoo licence for far too long. I look forward to the day when the animals can be moved to better zoos while a new management can either make South Lakes into a proper modern zoo or close it down completely.
I know she's a vet but is that correct, that she has been involved as the vet with the responsibilty for the collection? Another vet's name is quoted in the Council documents above as having treated at least some of the animals in recent months I think. She has been the vet the last few years. I believe the council have told them to get another as she is not properly qualified to be in such a position.
