South Lakes Wild Animal Park Safari Zoo 2017 news

It does seem that now national media are "involved" and reporting on South Lakes that something may give ...

But given DG's reputation do not count him out yet.

If and when it happens, I do hope they reinstate the caretaker director again and let him take over and get on with it. I would think keeper staff at the moment live under the guns ... (for now).

It was on Classic FM too, was surprised they had picked up on it, their news is usually just the main points.

This, I feel, is *the* pivotal point.......
I absolutely agree, the councils decision on the 6th is crucial , with mounting pressure from the national media now, and both CAPS and the BFF getting involved I think the odds are becoming stacked against the place. Even without Gill I think it would take a huge amount of effort to revert the situation now.

There's a two page spread in The Sun today which highlights a few animal deaths, a few past controversies and a lot of tittle tattle about David Gill's private life. It's done in true tabloid style so not too in depth but worth a read just to recap.

Rather silly comment piece in the Guardian today, based off the South Lakes situation:

Zoos shouldn’t be jails – let’s reimagine them and enjoy animals in the wild | Jules Howard

I have just posted this comment below the article in the Guradian.

A perfect world would not need zoos: neither would it need The Guardian.
This is not a perfect world. We need zoos, but we need good zoos because they play their part in protecting the natural world in ways that no other institutions can. I have been visiting zoos for nearly 60 years and I have seen the immense progress that has been made in improving the health and welfare of zoo animals in that time. Moreover the front-line conservation work that zoos fund and support has become of major importance all round the world.
I respect the views of people who do not wish to visit zoos, but some of the comments here are just unreal. Tales of throwing buns at elephants are as relevant to zoos today as laughing at the inmates of Bedlam are to psychiatric hospitals. Likewise there are almost no captured wild animals in British zoos today: the vast majority were born and bred in these very zoos.
On the other hand, I have no hesitation in condemning bad zoos. I have chosen never to visit South Lakes, because I have been horrified by some things I have heard about it. The latest report shows that Barrow Borough Council has been far too lenient with its zoo licence for far too long. I look forward to the day when the animals can be moved to better zoos while a new management can either make South Lakes into a proper modern zoo or close it down completely.

hi

his wife is a vet ? that explains rather a lot

She has been the vet the last few years. I believe the council have told them to get another as she is not properly qualified to be in such a position.

The Sun article is a little inaccurate. Gill has 2 children to his first wife, married a second wife for a short period, three children to his second partner (they never married) and one to a woman he had an affair with. He also has four grandchildren. Unfortunately the rest of the claims regarding the animal welfare are all true

Very, very well expressed gentle lemur.

I know she's a vet but is that correct, that she has been involved as the vet with the responsibilty for the collection? Another vet's name is quoted in the Council documents above as having treated at least some of the animals in recent months I think.

At risk of diverting the thread away from the intrigues in Cumbria, and while (as always) enjoying your thoughts here, Alan, I have to take issue with this statement: I think a perfect world would look like quite a lot like Prague Zoo (and would certainly have a place for the Manchester Guardian - even if, at times, its self-righteousness would drive me bonkers). As always, the suggestion that zoos are a sort of necessary evil makes me wince, a little. For me, a perfect world would consist of very many zoos, Portsmouth Football Club winning the FA Cup for the 47th consecutive season, folk music suddenly becoming the listening of choice for all, and a daily dose of The Guardian. The Sun, also mentioned on this thread, might not merit inclusion, however....

Portsmouth and folk music as well
Your Garden of Eden would be my Hell! :D

Actually the operative word is need - a perfect world could have a perfect zoo and a perfect MG too, but they would not be necessary.
