Safaripark Beekse Bergen is going to expand the elephant enclosure, a building permit was recently applied for. The project is named "Elephant Valley". This valley will be located next to the current enclosure and should be completed by mid-2023.

The first demolition works have already started. The wetland aviary and forest aviary have already been demolished (a new aviary will be build). The former ranger camp, the playground and the spotted hyena enclosure near the africa village have also been demolished.

The reason for the expansion is the pregnancy of three elephant cows; all three are due to give birth this summer.


In addition, a while ago, the Beekse Bergen also applied for planning permission to build an enclosure for small animals. What kind of animals are involved is not yet publicly known.

Can any of the documents of the building permits be seen on a public website?

Hopefully all goes well with the calves, three baby African elephants certainly would be a good reason to go there again.

No, they have not been published publicly. The only thing publicly published is the application itself: Gemeenteblad 2023, 80535 | Overheid.nl > Officiële bekendmakingen

That's the aviary with the Kirk's dik-dik. Beekse Bergen itself calls this the forest aviary.

There is now also a building plan available!

We can see here that the enclosure will go over the current forested area and ranger camp on the other side of Afrika village. There will be a new Savanna aviary with secretary birds and weavers, among others. As well as three new Cheetah enclosures and a new hyena enclosure.

Along with elephants, several Antelope species will also be allowed to roam the new savanna enclosure (Waterbuck and Sitatunga I believe)

Indeed, according to the press release, sitatunga and defassa waterbuck. The latter will be a new species for the Beekse Bergen.

Where in this plan is the existing elephant house? I know the park well, but I am completely lost!
 
Safaripark Beekse Bergen officially announced at the zoo entrance this morning that not one, but three elephants are pregnant. They are Pina-Nessi, Punda and Bongi. Yambo will be the father of these three calves. Pina-Nessi is due this autumn. Punda and Bongi are due in 2024.
 
A video on the new elephant habitat has been released on Beekse Bergen's youtube. This reveals that they plan to release the elephants in the new exhibit by (what I assume to be the end of) May, and have the whole new region ready for visitors by the summer vacation.

The new video also shows a lot of footage of the new enclosure, even for those who don't speak Dutch
