African elephant bull Shawu was placed on transport to Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon today.

I found that to be astounding, that this is the first African elephant born in the country. I checked the elephant database and apart for one stillborn at Safaripark Beekse Bergen in 2006 all others have indeed been Asian elephants.

It is indeed astounding but if you know that only 2 collections are working with Africans it's not that astounding anymore. Even so, a great archievement for Beekse Bergen and today or tomorrow I will visit the baby and - hopefully - make some nice pictures !
