Quite a day. Road to trail in Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge that was the point of the trip was unexpectedly closed, "detour" was walking past cornfields for ages, walked more than a mile and was maybe only a quarter done and decided to turn around and just go to the nearby zoo. This is my third visit. I think that small collections at nature centers will remain my main species-listing niche, but this facility is small-enough.
Swear I saw on the way in and last time, probably behind the scenes at this moment? Not on the website, though:
2 Miniature Donkeys
New (to me) Entrance Corncrib:
Signed for Zebra Finches (presumably Australian, but currently empty
Forest Area (forgot technical name):
Red-Tailed Hawk
Barred Owl
0.1 White-Tailed Deer
Common Raven
3 Mexican Wolves
Western Honeybees
Turkey Vulture
2 Llamas
2 Bald Eagles
Area of random exhibits:
African Penguins
North American River Otters
Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs
0.1 American Alligator
Farm area:
I remember free-ranging Domestic Ducks and Indian Peafowl, and they are still listed on the website, but I didn't see them. Chickens were cooped-up for the moment. Also remember Domestic Rabbits (still listed on website).
Juliana Pig
0.2 Buff Orpington Chickens (remember way more from past visits)
Main exhibit Goats (Pygmies, Nigerian Dwarves, and Mixes)
Tunis Sheep (signed, not present)
0.1 Alpaca
San Clemente Island Goats
Rainforest enclosure:
Was originally home to way more random animals, including an Old English Game Bantam Rooster and a Green Jay. Now, only signs of these three species. Website has no signs of Rooster, but still lists Green Jay and a rarity I don't remember ever seeing here: Masked Bobwhites. Neither birds are signed, however.
0.1.1 Cottontop Tamarins
Red-Footed Tortoises (not on exhibit)
Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth
Australian outback/tortoise co-hab pasture and nearby horses:
2 Miniature Horses
1.0.2 Eastern Grey Kangaroos
0.1 Emu
Sulcata Tortoise
1.0.1 Leopard Tortoises (off-exhibit)
Outdoor aviary:
Remember Sun Conures, Cockatiels, and Barbary Doves; probably not out due to the season as they are still listed on the website.
Blue-Faced Honeyeaters
0.1 Himalayan Monal
Parrots and nearby capuchins:
Remember seeing Millitary Macaws and 0.1 Eclectus here before - signs for umbrella cockatoo and scarlet macaw looked very impermanent, so I wonder if these are ambassador animals that rotate being in view (with the Moluccan staying out as I remember it living where the raven now lives in the forest)
2 Panamanian White-Throated Capuchins
1.0 Moluccan Cockatoo (off-exhibit)
Umbrella Cockatoo
Scarlet Macaw
Off-Exhibit Ambassador Animals:
Per website. This is where the 0.1 Eclectus I remember is now listed. The Rabbits are here too, so I wonder if they moved from the barnyard to being ambassadors (as their exhibit is now home to a pig).
3 Asian Giant Toads
Ball Python
0.1 Boa Constrictor
Common Blue-Tongued Skink
Domestic Cat
Long-Tailed Chinchilla
Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches
Mexican Red-Knee Tarantula (T. smithi)
Spotted Turtle
White-Throated Mud Turtle
Now excuse me while I never stop thinking of the tiny girl in a mermaid costume who deemed the tamarins "A L I E N S".
