Visited the Saint Louis Zoo today and I must say this is easily one of the best zoos in the United States, and actually it might be my new favorite. I was expecting it to be very good and it still exceeded my expectations. Only disappointment was that the hippos were off exhibit as they were doing some work on the underwater viewing windows. River's Edge though is an absolutely fantastic exhibit, and seeing the Asian elephants swimming was awesome. The only bad part of the zoo is the bear grottoes, but around River's Edge there is a lot of construction as new exhibits are being built for the sun and andean bears. Penguin and Puffin Coast is also spectacular. Definitely a fantastic zoo with plenty of solid exhibits and even a few spectacular ones (River's Edge and Penguin and Puffin Coast are top 25 worthy), and I would recommend this zoo to anyone who has not been.

I agree! Saint Louis is surely one of the top 5 or so zoos in the nation, with a vast collection of hoofstock, insects, birds, primates, reptiles, bears and everything else in between. It is a very complete zoo as some folks spend all day between the Reptile House and Bird House, while others lose themselves around the River's Edge complex and the great ape habitats. The bear grottoes will soon be history, as while some species will have modern, naturalistic exhibits in the River's Edge zone the current grottoes will be transformed into Polar Bear Point. It is also a large zoo, usually taking many hours to properly see everything.

I agree, sums it up very well. Spent 7 hours there on Wednesday, and loved it so much I went back this morning for 2 more hours before I had to drive to Chicago. River's Edge is my favorite part of the zoo, and they also have one of the best, most effectively designed black rhino exhibits I have ever seen. Probably one of the only black rhino exhibit where design features are taken into account! I would love to return when the new additions to River's Edge are complete and the polar bear exhibit is finished. It's awesome to see an already great zoo working on new exhibits. It makes me wonder about zoos that need a lot of work, but still don't have any upcoming exhibits in the works haha.

Yep free entry, however expensive parking. I did get a early tip to park early in a side street and get free parking.
 
Priya came out to meet Saint Louis today, and boy, does she love to play!


Seeing her definitely made my zoo morning. :)

This video is a few years old, but here's what their polar bear exhibit may look like. I do hope they modify it a bit and add more grass/dirt areas for the bears.

More than likely the same reasoning most zoos have with very old concrete exhibits.The demolition cost is simply way to expensive!
