Saint Louis Zoo Saint Louis Zoo news 2024

Updates from my visit 05/26/2024:
-The giant tortoise outdoor exhibit is still unoccupied but it is fenced off.
-Malayan gharial is not on exhibit and no longer signed.
-Black tree monitors are signed now.
-Mandarin ratsnake and Puerto Rican crested toad have swapped places in the Herpetarium.
-Both horned guans are off exhibit and no longer signed. As it is pretty commonplace in the Bird House for species be taken off exhibit then pop back up shortly after, I am crossing my fingers that this is the case here. If not this would be a very significant loss to the zoo's collection, but I don't think we can draw conclusions just yet.
-Bateleur eagle is indoors again.
-The small walk-in aviary on the Bird Garden Trail is still closed, but I saw three tawny frogmouths from the outside.
-The east African crowned cranes have moved back with the Addra gazelles.
-There is an Addra gazelle in the giraffe yard,

Updates from my visit 06/02/2024:
-There is an Edward's pheasant chick in the exhibit next to Luzon bleeding heart. The bearded barbet is no longer in that exhibit with the pheasants.
-Superb starling is no longer in the mixed exhibit with white-throated ground dove and pheasant pigeon.
-The rhinoceros hornbill that hatched earlier this year is now in the exhibit where king vulture was.
-The bateleur eagle is back inside.

Any more information on what is happening with the giant tortoises here (how many Aldabrans do they have?)?
The Malayan gharial has passed away or been sent to another zoo?

Do you know if the zoo ever plans to keep them on site?
I think it was expressie mentioned that the off-site breeding facility would be the dedicated facility for breeding red wolves at St. Louis Zoo. Along with being a breeding preserve for various hoofstock species and other yet to be selected new target species for the Sears Lehman Jr. Wildlife Reserve.

Awesome. Will they be featured at the wildlife reserve?

I really don't know at this point, nor what you mean by featured (you mean for public exhibition?). What I have - confidentially - is that they will have multiple red wolf pairs on site (which will allow the red wolf recovery program to get a big boost both in the assurance colony approach as well as for restoration purposes of re-establishing the species back in the SE USA) and already one active breeding pack.

For now the breeding preserve is still in the development stages and from what I have heard not open to zoo visiting public.

The Sears Lehmann Jr. Wildlife Reserve is not the same facility as the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park. The former is in Franklin County; the latter is in the northern part of Saint Louis County. The WildCare Park is the facility that will be public and exhibit a plethora of hoofstock species, not the wildlife reserve.

Oh, will they be in the Wildcare Park? That’s what I meant.

Why? Is something else in their habitat instead
They haven't said anything publicly. There were two that were on exhibit in the former Andean bear exhibit for a little bit, and the original exhibit became vacant. Now, the former Andean bear exhibit is occupied the their giant anteater, and the original painted dog exhibit remains vacant.

I wonder why. What are they planning for the old exhibit then?
