Saint Louis Zoo Saint Louis Zoo news 2024

They went to Dallas World Aquarium in January, Source is species360. A lot of zoo's will wait to disclose an animal move until the announcement is mutually agreed upon by the zoo's social media departments.
The timeline does not seem to add up on this, seeing as the species was present and on exhibit at the Saint Louis Zoo after January. I reported that both individuals were on exhibit in the Bird House on February 4th. Both were taken off exhibit as of my visit on May 26th, but one was relocated to the small walk-in aviary by my June 9th visit. By my July 21st visit, the species was no longer on exhibit at the zoo.

Updates from yesterday's (10/20/2024) visit:

-The Somali wild ass foal as well as the females she is on exhibit with moved into the yard closer to the giraffes.
-There is a burlap fence around the vacant hoofstock yard behind the giraffes. It has fairly minimal impact on visibility, but there did not appear to be an animal in the exhibit, and there was nothing signed there.
-The Jambu fruit doves in the Bird House are now signed.
-There is now an unsigned sunbittern in the Bird House Central Garden.
-The great horned owl is back in the same exhibit the species was in previously on the Bird Garden Trail.
-Tawny frogmouths are back in the small walk-in aviary.
-Mandarin ratsnake is back on exhibit in the Herpetarium, this time where the Puerto Rican crested toad was.
-Mountain pitviper is no longer on exhibit in the Herpetarium. The exhibit is now occupied by Puerto Rican crested toad.

As an exciting update on her pregnancy, (0.1) Jada the Asian Elephant is expected to give birth to her first calf between the end of this year and early next year (2025).

While the timeframe is worded vaguely (somewhat) from the article that I sourced this information. I still suspect the anticipation will be heightened regardless.

On September 26th, the zoo announced they bred and released 1,000 snails of various species in the Partula genus into the wild, as well as coordinating a further 2,200 snails from other unspecified US facilities.

On October 25th, the zoo announced that a roseate spoonbill and a (0.1) snowy egret hatched on July 28th and August 10th respectively which are on display in the Cypress Swamp area.

On October 31st, 2024 the Greenville Zoo announced that they have acquired Irina the Amur leopard, who was born at the St. Louis Zoo in 2022, and was on exhibit with her mother, Dot, until very recently. She is being brought to the Greenville Zoo to eventually be paired with a young male from a unspecified facility in Colorado for breeding, who will arrive at the zoo in a few months.
Source: City of Greenville on Instagram: " It’s time for the BIG reveal. ▶️ WATCH to see the @greenvillezoo’s new animal Irina emerge from behind the door. Did you guess correctly? ‼️ SPOILER ALERT ‼️ DON’T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU WATCH THE VIDEO. ⬇️ Due to our history of success breeding Amur Leopards, the zoo received 2-year-old Irina from the St. Louis Zoo. Her mate, a 1-year-old male, will arrive from Colorado in a few months. After producing multiple healthy cubs to help repopulate her endangered species Jade is retiring to North Dakota."

On my visit yesterday, River’s edge from the entrance up to the hyenas and cheetahs was closed. You had to go in by the elephants and turn around at the cheetahs. No reasons why are given publicly.
River’s Edge is open back up all the way. Only changes that are able to be seen is potentially a renovation of the bridge near the Black Rhino habitat.

On November 15th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) red kangaroo named Arugula was born on February 7th which is on display in the Red Rocks area.

On November 18th, the zoo announced their (1.0) African lion named Ingozi passed away on November 15th at age 17 due to advanced liver and spinal disease.

While it’s certainly sad to see Ingozi pass, my hope is that we are able to get some more active lions in the near future. Even for the regular level of inactivity you can expect from lions, you could just tell how old Ingozi was. Poor guy had his mane shaved in previous months and just looked kinda sad.

If I’m correct this makes the zoo a four generational elephant herd holder and if I’m also correct the only one currently having a four generation herd in the US.
Yes it is indeed now a four-generation herd (Pearl-Raja-Jade-Jet). This won't be for long, as Raja is soon to move to the Columbus Zoo to make way for a new bull named Samurda from the Oregon Zoo to breed with Raja's three daughters (Jade and her half-sisters Maliha and Priya).

If Samdura was to have a baby with Jade would it be a four generational herd again of no? Sorry can’t wrap my head around all of this.
