Note that this list will be made up of multiple posts, one for each zone. In order to maintain proper flow, please refrain from replying to this thread until the last post is made. That post will be for The Wild, so after that goes out feel free to reply with any corrections, questions, or commentary you may have.

This list will only contain live animals that are intended to be regularly visible to the general public.

For many species I have opted to use a different common name than used by the zoo in their signage. This is part of why I have included scientific names for every species. If a scientific name on the list differs from the signage that will be noted.

I have tagged all species as spoilers so the list can be navigated as an outline, and people using it can click on a section they would like see in detail.

Disclaimer that some exhibits were closed to the public on the original day of this audit. Additional auditing was completed on subsequent visits for those exhibits. If this is the case for a given section, that will be noted. Additionally, some species have been added and removed since the original audit. In the same vein, those changes will be indicated.

Each line represents one enclosure. If multiple species are on the same line this indicates a mixed species exhibit.

Symbol guide:

?= Species is my own speculation, as it was unspecified in signage. Classification given in zoo signage will be listed after in quotation.

*= Species is unsigned.

&n= indicates there is a note necessary to be made about the marked text. “n” will be replaced by whichever number is assigned to a given note. All notes for a given zone will be included at the end of that zone’s post for reference.

Discovery Corner notes

&1- I did not see the slug on my visit and therefore had no point of reference to speculate which species it was.

&2- I did not see the praying mantis on my visit and therefore had no point of reference to speculate which species it was.

&3- This species used to be classified in the genus Gerris and the Saint Louis Zoo can be contrarian with nomenclature.

&4- I did not manage to get a photo of the black widow on my visit and therefore had no reliable point of reference to speculate which species it was.

&5- I did not manage to get a photo of the cockroach on my visit and therefore had no reliable point of reference to speculate which species it was.

&6- I did not manage to get a photo of either the Asian water scorpion or the leech on my visit and therefore had no reliable point of reference to speculate which species it was. However, in my research I found that the zoo has mud leeches (Haemopis marmorata) and Ranatra fusca, so these are likely the leech and water scorpion species in this exhibit.

&7 Only the caterpillars are alive. There are some adults on display as biofacts.

&8 No animal is signed at this tank and I did not see an animal inside it. Presumed unoccupied, but not confirmed.

&9 Zoo signage says they keep two subspecies, H. c chioneus and H. c galanthus.

&10 Zoo signage says there keep multiple subspecies, include several unspecified, H.m. agalaope, and H.m. rosina.

&11 Zoo signage says they keep several subspecies, one H.e lativitta, one H.e cyrbia and the other unspecified.

&12 zoo signage says they keep both red, blue, and green forms.

&13 zoo signage says they keep two subspecies, including H. c chioneus and H. c fulgidus.

&14 zoo signage says they keep two subspecies, including H.i telchinia and H. i. latreille.

Historic Hill Notes

&1 Temporarily unoccupied, used in warmer months.

&2 All but one resident species also have access to Canopy Trails, and may be found in either exhibit.

&3 This species does not have access to Canopy Trails.

&4 Most resident species also have access to Primate House.

&5 Resident species rotate exhibits, any given species does not have a single designated exhibit here.

&6 I am unsure whether or not these species ever use the Primate House exhibits or not.

Another correction, I forgot about a section of the Insectarium, hide and go seek. The species list is as follows:

Hide and go seek

Malayan jungle nymph (Heteropteryx dilatata), giant walking leaf (Pulchriphyllium giganteum) | signed by the zoo as "Phyllium giganteum"

Thanks for the list! When I have some time later down the line I'll be interested to compare how the collection in the Herpetarium and Bird Houses especially have changed over time :)

They definitely change the most out of all the St. Louis Zoo exhibits. It seems like every visit something is different, and I visit a lot.

Yet another edit for clarity, this was 11/21/22. I really should have put the year in the title, but its too late to go back and edit it. Not sure if this is something that can be fixed by mods but if so that would be greatly appreciated.

Yet another correction, I missed central African rock python (Python sebae). Its in a large terrarium on the upper level of the Herpetarium.
