Sakkarbaug Zoo

Thirty Indian wolves bred in Sakkarbaug Zoo will be reintroduced to the Banaskantha region in Gujarat, in order to return natural predators of both nilgai and wild boar that are currently pests in the area. A soft release enclosure is being built that may allow the wolves to be released as early as this December.

The reintroduction programme for Indian wolves has had its first success, with the first cub recently born in the wild to zoo-bred animals. Their pack, consisting of a breeding male and female and two older cubs were released into the wild in September 2024. Another pack, also five strong, was reintroduced in December 2024.

The wolves are, as hoped, preying predominantly on nilgai (90% of the diet), with the remainder being wild boar, hares and other small animals. The reintroduction is already seeing other environmental benefits, with jackals and striped hyaena returning to the area with the re-establishment of the food chain.
