hey, i was wondering if anyone had herd of any federation zoos selling any of there animals off. i have herd about one in devon trying to sell off 3 male lions and was wondering if this was the only case!

I assume you are refering to Combe Martin? I cant think of anywhere else in devon with 3 male lions. They are not in the zoo federation (or biaza as it is now known)

I am surprised that the lions are being moved, they were only aquired last year?

I was in Devon just recently and saw some old advertisments on a bus- 'coming soon to CombeMartin W.P ' three magnificent lions'. As Combe Martin are not open out of season maybe things are getting difficult or the lions are proving too expensive to keep?

Maybe they have outgrown the former snow leopard enclosure where they were being kept last year? They were only youngsters when they arrived.

I thought they were planning to buld an all singing all dancing lion exhibit (i imagine it would feature lots of artificial rockwork, collumns, sphynx's in keeping with other developments lol!) :)

Pretty certain it wasn't Coombe martin, think it might be from a private collection.

It was indicated that it was a zoo, thats why i assumed combe martin.

Im pretty certain that there are no lions in private hands in devon

The liger I have seen advertised last year is located in the West Country . I don't think that is in a zoo .

BIAZA and EAZA zoos do sometime sell animals to other collections, usually though surplus animals are advertised on the BIAZA or EAZA websites in the 'members only' section. Combe Martin wildlife park is a provisional BIAZA member.

Coombe Martin may of wanted to sell off the 3 male lions Samson,Lennie and Leo who where born in Linton Zoo in May 2007.This is not the first time i have heard of them wanting to get rid of them.
But i think it has all stopped as i think the enclosure is being built? anyone know anymore?
I know they where struggling especially in the winter to keep the zoo going with the amount of food they have to give them!
Their father Riziki is one of the largest lions in the UK so they are definately going to grow to a pretty big size!
I hope all goes well i was very close to these cubs when they were at Linton and i hope they are being treated well :)
Regards

When I visited Coombe Martin a couple of months ago a large Lion enclosure was under construction , the lions would get into it from their current enclosure , using the same house . The three young males were sat together on their raised platform and looked good .

Thanks for confirming that Bele :)
They should be very big and good looking lions if they are anything like their father.

Just a quick question does been a BIAZA member prevent a collection from selling animals direct to the public?

A quote from the BIAZA legislation:

If animals bred in zoos are sold as pets to the general public, a licence is required from the local authority under the Pet Animals Act 1951

If that is the case think i`m going to do some digging!

Combe martin are members of biaza

Combe Martin arquired the 3 male lion cubs, from Linton Zoo, Feb 2008. When, they arrived, there were placed in the old snow leopard enclosure, while, they enclosure was been given planning permission and built. The building of the enclosure, was started in summer 2008, as I havent been to Combe Martin Wildlife Park, since Nov 2008, I am unaware, if the enclosure is completed, yet. I am aware, the first building plans, sumbitting, were rejected, as of objections from the people of the village. Im currently, unaware of the changes to the plans, etc.

I have been told, by a few people, in the past, Combe Martin wildlife, has bought and sold animals over the years, unaware of what was, bought and sold and when. But, this was all before Combe Martin Wildlife Park, was granted a provsional membership to BIAZA.
