San Antonio Zoo San Antonio Zoo News 2017

A bald eagle has come from the Santa Barbara Zoo and is now on exhibit. It was originally rescued in 1998. Based on the video in the link, it's in an exhibit that was formerly home to storks, cranes, and ducks (obviously is now refurbished).

American Bald Eagle that was shot, rescued now at San Antonio Zoo
When I went a few weeks ago, the exhibit that it is currently in was pretty much barren, with a sign for nene but none to be found, and a few cranes (I recall African crowned of some sort). It also had whistling ducks mixed in, which I assume are wild. It's nice to see something done with that exhibit, but I think the San Antonio zoo should do a complete renovation similar to the Fort Worth zoo is now.

They seem to be trying to patch up the old parts, such as a large window viewing added for lions that was new when I went that changed little to nothing of the actual exhibit.

It is also odd to me of the location for the eagle to be in the waterfowl area.

All the waterfowl in that area can move from exhibit to exhibit. How, I don't know, but I've seen each of them in most of the exhibits. Whatever historic society is in San Antonio prevents full renovation of much of the zoo, quite annoyingly. That's why I commend them on any way they work around that. True, the location is odd, but where else would it go?

At some point recently, other animals have been added to the savanna. Unfortunately there's no list, but from a Facebook photo I can see marabou stork and common zebra.

How sad, my condolences go out to his keepers. Wish he could have lived to be 43. Hopefully Uma gets a friend. The hippos have been one of my favorite parts of the zoo, it will be weird seeing only Uma. R.I.P. Tumbo

Yeah, the hippo exhibit always appealed to me, and it's not even like I'm a big hippo fan. It's full of these fish, and I went up to it and I saw that the hippos would open their mouths and the fish would clean 'em out, I didn't know that happened.
