The zoo teased that there is some "big" news about Congo Falls and have graced us right now with a new piece of concept art of one of the outdoor gorilla exhibits.

Quite often, renderings for future zoo exhibits can change, so it's good to reserve judgement until the finished product is open for all to see. However, this image doesn't really impress me. The metal overhead chute (aesthetically ugly and difficult to clean for keepers), the 'treehouse' wooden thing in the middle, the enclosed metal tunnel for visitors, and the general appearance would not be for my taste. I'd much prefer a Bronx/DAK 'jungle' atmosphere. But each to their own! :)

And the big news is…

The zoo have broken ground on the gorilla exhibit:

San Antonio Zoo breaks ground on $15 million Congo Falls gorilla exhibit

The exhibit, which the zoo describes as among the most significant milestones in its 110-year history, will be among the nation's largest gorilla habitats and include features not found anywhere else.

Among those highlights include a climate-controlled enclosure, a gorilla medical facility and elevated viewing areas for guests, as well as the Mays Family Silverback Peak — a world-first 60-foot tall gorilla tower with a skyline view of downtown.

From the images, the exhibits being replaced are the former Cheetah/Sitatunga, Secretary Bird, former Addax, Addra Gazelle, and Giant Anteater exhibits. I believe the Addra Gazelles and Secretary Birds are getting a new home in the expanded Savannah section, Addax were sadly phased out, I wonder what they plan to do with the Giant Anteater. In any case I am excited to see a new exhibit being built at San Antonio, hopefully the species that had to be moved out like the Addax can make a return when the zoo expands across the highway!

Ugh, so cheesy and ugly

something I noticed in this video, was that they now have a Southern Ground Hornbill on exhibit which is new afaik, but I can't tell which habitat this is, the hornbill appears at the 1:02 minute mark if you want to see

Of course we had to get on this trend! Shoutout to our Animal Care Specialists for the amazing work they do every day! ❤️ | San Antonio Zoo | San Antonio Zoo · Original audio

The hornbill have been off display for several years. That exhibit is located next to the kangaroos and behind the bird house in a maintenance area.

on facebook, they showed a timelapse of a unspecified Lorikeet sp. growing up(I'm not great at distinguishing them, but I think it's either a Rainbow Lorikeet or a Sunset Lorikeet)

On March 7th, the zoo announced the sex of the lorikeet, (1.0).

Also on March 7th, it was announced that the zoo acquired a (0.1) black howler monkey from the Los Angeles Zoo in California.

On March 19th, the zoo announced that a (0.0.1) scaly-breasted lorikeet hatched.

Baby lorikeet is so tiny! Scaly-breasted lorikeets are native to Australia, and primarily eat nectar and fruit! In a few short weeks, this little one will begin to grow its beautiful green feathers. | San Antonio Zoo | San Antonio Zoo · Original audio

the website has been overhauled and that includes a new updated map. the map no longer shows the "safari and adventure park" coming on the other side of the highway which currently has the ice age animatronics. new/returning species to the zoo such as the capybaras, malayan flying foxes, and Yellow-Footed Rock Wallabies are on the map now(though I am worried about the bush dogs as the species is no longer present on the map). also Congo Falls and the expanded Savannah have been added to the map aswell.

Their last remaining bush dog is/was very old so it shouldn't be a surprise if it's gone. Still a shame, I'd been hoping so badly that it could hold on until I'm able to visit the zoo in just over 3 months.
