San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Safari Park News 2021

I heard about that, but didn't know that the things are so serious! :( They were one of the main reasons for me to visit San Diego. Truly iconic species. What a loss! Hopefully they will be around, at least.

There's still quite a lot of Giants around, just the owners have been so difficult that all the other zoos don't want to deal with them anymore. Whether this ends up with the species slowly disappearing since they'll be at one facility remains to be seen really. This highlights the problem with a species being controlled by a certain few people or a group, if things go sour the program flops.

The SD Zoo still has a the sole male with Grevy’s zebra herd, albeit a really old individual so maybe not for much longer :/ It’s a sad loss to us ungulate lovers but we can only hope that no further loss of species continues to happen due to multitudes of issues

Well said @Julio C Castro, but I am afraid that the Zoo World will continue to lose Tropical Ungulates. Europe is down to one specimen of 5 species: Slender-horned gazelle, Etiopian Klipspringer, Red Hartebest, Grey Brocket and Mountain Anoa. I doubt that any of them will return to the Continent in a near future.

Yes @Animals R AMAZING! they disappearing from Europe. The Klipspringer is the only pure Ethiopian subspecies outside Africa, actually. Hopefully North America are having them long time.
Oh yeah, IIRC most if not all the individuals in NA are generic and sadly they aren't managed at the subspecific level. Now that I think about it, correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like the EAZA has done a much better job managing rare African and especially Asian hoofstock overall than the AZA.

Received an email regarding the funding of one part of their re-imagining for Elephant Valley: Tembo Trail. Not much is provided other than it’s transforming the southern entrance to Elephant Valley. During my last visit I was told that the Safari Park expects to start breaking ground within the next 2-3 years. Wasn’t clear if elephants would be present during construction of Elephant Valley.

I have a feeling Ndulamitsi and her son Umzula Zuli will be sent to Reid park while San Diego will have Umngani her daughters Khosi and Mkhaya along with Swazi her daughter Qinisa and Umoya's daughter Phakamile with maybe Callie or Ajani as the breeding bull

I doubt they will be sending any more of their animals to other zoos for breeding. The only one that is likely to leave in the future is Zuli. And I also very much doubt Ajani or Callee are leaving their zoos anytime soon. Like others have stated in the past, bulls that are more likely to be transferred to SDZSP are Tonka and/or Tamani.

Ali or Jeannot could also be potential candidates for San Diego both bulls are very valuable to the population

Ali and Jeannot are both very valuable which is why they both have been collected for AI (sadly Junnot hasn’t sired any offspring so far), however they most likely aren’t going anywhere because of ownership. Knoxville has stated they are looking to move Tonka in the past since he is valuable for the population and I’m very certain the SSP will move Tamani eventually for breeding or at least bring some cows to Kansas City (though the former is more likely) since he is a younger bull.

Some updates from my visit today:
  1. The tufted deer are now gone and have been replaced by red-flanked duiker. The duikers are also still present in their other habitat that they share with the sitatunga by the tram loading station.
  2. There were a number of unsigned species in Nairobi Village including a couple snakes.
  3. There was a gerenuk calf, impala calf, and several sprinbok calves in the nursery.
  4. Gorillas Frank and Monroe are now living seperately from the family group and have formed a bachelor troop. Also, Silverback Winston will no longer be breeding and the breeding females of the troop Kokamo and Imani are both on birth control. They will not breed until Winston passes away and is replaced by a new silverback.
  5. The ring-tailed lemurs have moved off habitat and have been replaced by a pair of red-cheeked gibbons.
  6. The park's breeding male Masai giraffe Gowan and one of the girls Gasira were showing a lot of breeding behavior today.
  7. The park has a new breeding male Desert Bighorn sheep so let's hope for a bunch of kids running around next spring!
  8. A litter of 7-month old caracal kittens arrived from Nashville Zoo a couple months ago and I believe they are supposed to be animal ambassadors.

Where did they have tufted deer on exhibit? The old pudu exhibit at the entry walkway next to Wings of the World?

It was next to the Chacoan peccary habitat and the crowned crane island, this is all right by Mombasa lagoon.

Ah, looking on their map they conveniently have the tufted deer on their map still. I think I missed those exhibits when I visited, although I did see the Blue Crane island (Shoebill at the time). Didn't go far enough towards the crowned crane island to see the peccary and deer exhibits.

Callee just got 2 females at Omaha pregnant so it’s doubtful he’s leaving anytime soon and I’ve heard Ajani has been mating with the elephants there and most of those girls just hit sexual maturity. I honestly think Tonka is better choice to go to the Safari Park. I used to think it should’ve been Louie which was really stupid thinking on my part lol
