I don't think they have any Rusa anymore, I will check. I went into the Asian enclosure awhile ago with the Zoo Internquest Program. I remember they had Axis Deer, Chinese Sika, and Malaysian Sambar though. Maybe now they will have Blue Sheep on display.

Okay so I got species lists for you guys. Recent news in the Asian exhibits is that they now have Sarus Cranes in the Central Asia area and a new Javan Banteng male, one that doesn't think its a female.

They have data on ISIS all mixed up for the kulan and onager ....
No clue, my guess is that it is the Persian subspecies maybe but not sure.
Our newest bundle of joy has arrived! Yesterday at 2:30 PM a male Eastern black rhinoceros was born at the Park to mother Lembe and father Jambia. He's the 14th Eastern black rhino born at the Park. Join us in welcoming him!

I was at the Safari Park yesterday and they have started construction on connecting the 2 elephant yards.

As of Sunday, they tore down about 50 feet of the fence in the old Asian yard nearest to Tembo Stadium and the new Elephant Patio. I understand that they are going to build a ramp between the two yards with a gate similar to the gates up at the bull yards.
Msholo is in the back pens and his exhibit is filled with construction equipment. The herd is confined to the bull pens and bedrooms yesterday and today for construction on their yard. I expect that they tore down the fence in the herd's yard yesterday and are working on the construction today. I do not know whether the gate will be at the top of the incline in the herd's yard or at the bottom of the incline at the entrance to the old Asian yard (or somewhere in between). Whenever I checked on the elephant cam it was pointed to the herd in the bull yards. I took some closer photos of the construction on Sunday which I will post later today. I'll probably be at the Park next weekend and will give an update.

Thanks for the information and I can't wait for those pictures. I am really glad that they started this already. I still have not seen the new Elephant viewing area and hopefully this will be complete by the time I come back home in December.

Attached are 2 images showing the construction. The people in the image off to the right are on the Elephant Patio.
I'm curious about how the keepers will be able to cross over the ramp. The pool in the herd yard is immediately to the right of the construction right in front of the Elephant Patio and the valves to turn the water on and off and drain the pool are by the Patio. Also, the keepers frequently bring one or more of the elephants down to the pool for a soaking and to give them treats. It's a long walk from the barns around the back of the exhibit to the pool.

Thanks for the updates. They will also likely need the additional yards so they can separate groups, such as to prepare them for shipping. As the herd and all their calves grow, some will be sent out. Two females with their calves (and possibly one bull) will be sent here to Reid Park Zoo in about a year.
Is Tucson opening a new elephant exhibit too?
Yes, yes, yes! Construction on Expedition Tanzania is set to begin in about a month (having been delayed a couple times due to city funding). It is expected to take one year to complete. Our keepers have been working with someone from San Diego for a while now on training protocols, etc.
Reid Park is the last of the new wave of elephant exhibits am I correct? I know we had a topic for elephant exhibits somewhere.. gotta resurrect that one.
