I understand how the animals can go to the ranchers. Could you provide with a link to the studbooks that show the transition of San Diego Zoological Society's animals down to Joe to Lolli Livestock? If you could, I could complain to the society or maybe the society does not know. It is quite sad, that Bongo is a beautiful animal and I hate Texas ranches and lame circus shows.

That was a very sad and depressing video :( I really don't have many words for it. Such a beautiful animal shoved into some tiny corral, surrounded on all sides by noisy people. Then shuffled off to meet its fate.

Surrounded by *Texans* which is scarier. No offense to anyone here from Texas... :p

Really?....come on....read the old newspaper articles, books, and internet. The zoological society has been showed physical evidence time and time again....they don't care! Do you have any idea how many thousands of animals have been sent to the dealers since they were caught red handed? Take Tanganyika Wildlife Park, they pleaded guilty to sending san diegos animals to auction and hunting ranches....since then he's gotten 1.0 black rhino, 4.0 indian rhino, 1.3 cuviers gazelles, 2.3 tufted deer, springbok, giraffe, sable, kudu, colobus monkeys, the list goes on.

If I showed animals from the studbooks going directly to a hunting ranch dealer and had evidence...all they would say is how do you know that animal came from us? Or some ranches have ear notches like us(no they don't). They will come up with an excuse and keep on dealing...there ties with dealers are just to deep for most to understand.

In recent news, the San Diego Zoo has been renovating their entrance recently. The parking lot has been given new pavement, and there is a new drop off area at the entrance. There is also on a new structure at the front and the Front Street Cafe got a renovation with a few planters and decorative fences. The front of the reptile house also got renovated and there is an actual front entrance now. I don't know what else is being renovated, just giving a few updates.

San Diego Zoo thread 2

Since the original thread is exceedingly long now, I am taking the liberty of starting a new thread for SDZ news.

The zoo has figured out yet another way to make money by adding another extra-fee attraction. At the entrance to the panda exhibit, there is a green screen and a photographer who takes a picture of your group. Across from the exhibit exit is a booth where you can buy a photo of you with pandas digitally inserted in the background.

For those who asked. The Wolf's Guenons are now in the old indoor concrete cages where the Francois Langurs used to be by the Orangutans.

Yeah, in the 1900 first generation cages that were made in the last decade in Bear Canyon and in one of the netted enclosures in Monkey Trails I believe.

The San Diego Zoo has a new event coming up next weekend called Reptile Mania. New events include the grand opening of the Galapagos Turtle exhibit and a new Alligator Snapping Turtle exhibit in the reptile house. Visitors will be able to help name the new Alligator Snapping Turtle. I guess these new animal naming events have been really popular for the new San Diego Zoo Global.

The opening of a state-of-the-art giant tortoise exhibit IMO was long overdue. So, that is a fine start! On the chances of breeding front: the plan was to separate the various (sub-)species from the wild caughts and set up proper breeding groups from within the various (sub-)species. What has become of that plan?

I'm sure the keepers enjoy the new barn to help them care for the tortoises. I believe (but not sure) that the tortoises are separated by subspecies now, and I'm not sure about breeding programs set up.

Also, apparently the pandas are getting their exhibits refurbished. Anyone hear of this or know how large the changes are? With so much money and attention the pandas bring for the San Diego Zoo, hopefully the new exhibits will be quite good. My expectations are running low lately though. Has anyone gotten any information on this in the ZOONOOZ maybe? I'm in college so I don't get the magazine anymore.

Here's a blog on the process of the new exhibit.

It sounds like they will just enhance the space they currently have rather than do a complete remodel.

Yeah, I posted a question and they said they weren't expanding the exhibit. It's a shame, I'm pretty sure the National Zoo's Red Panda exhibit is bigger than the San Diego's Giant Panda exhibit.
