About a month ago the zoo put two new 9 month old Babirusa males from L.A. Zoo into the old anoa exhibit behind the meerkats in the urban jungle.

They also put a Vietnam flying squirrel out in the old cages by the Koala.

Thanks for the updates. Interesting about the new exhibit by the maintenance area. I hope it contains either servals or caracals, not something ridiculous like Pallas cats. By the time that I come home for summer, it looks like the zoo will have changed quite a bit. Do you have any idea where the Chinese Leopard exhibit and the Trumpeter Hornbill exhibits will be? If the Trumpeter Hornbill is along the edges of the Ituri Forest exhibit, it won't be so bad zone wise.

I uploaded pictures.

Well, Cat Canyon is long due for an overhaul, so that is good news. Especially if they keep it focused on cats. And a new cat exhibit up by the meerkats is also fantastic news. And an expansion into currently unused land is very, very intriguing.

Good thing we have a new ZooChatter who is a regular at the zoo and looks like she will be a regular on this forum. Keep us informed!

Golden snub-nosed monkey. Are there Golden snub-nosed monkeys at San Diego Zoo or WAP? Are they breeding? Can one find them somewhere else in a zoo?

There are no Golden Snub Nosed Monkeys outside of Asia. Though the wish list has items for golden monkeys, I think those are for the Society's conservation work in China.

Applicant: Zoological Society of San Diego, San Diego, CA; PRT-32684A
The applicant requests a permit to import ten live captive-bred
gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) from the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust,
Tamil Nadu, India, for the purpose of enhancement of the survival of
the species.

10? Wow, I thought they just wanted another breeding pair. That would be a huge addition to the Gharial SSP though, even if they could get two males. Where would they keep all of these Gharials though?

From the zoo's facebook:

Join us in extending our heartfelt gratitude to long time friend and supporter of the Zoo, Conrad Prebys, for his transformational donation of $15 million. His incredibly generous gift will support our new habitats and exhibit renovations for Australian and African mammals, reptiles, and birds to be completed by our centennial birthday in 2016.
.

And from their website:

The San Diego Zoo is wildly grateful to Conrad T. Prebys for his recent $15 million leadership committment. His gift--the largest in our history--initiates our 55 million renovation and expansion efforts to be completed by 2016, our Centennial.

I love the idea of a winding walkway down Big Cat Trail. A way to add a lot more exhibits and also (I assume) make it pedestrian only, so you don't have to worry about their big tour buses. I hope they keep it mostly cats though!

The linked article is great - I really like this guy (donor Conrad Prebys). He says wealth is a sacred trust to be distributed - what a great attitude. And how lucky for the San Diego Zoo to have a donor that tells the director "if you ever need anything, just call me."
