No, I am shocked. I visited that so-called zoo once, it does not even deserve the title zoo. It is a four acre animal prison with small metal cages.

I would guess we would all be shocked at how much of the former Horn and Hoof mesa collection (among other dispositions) is now in the hands of private collectors, some of whose facilities and operating principles are not all that different from this despicable place.

Yes, please. I try to walk the zoo at least once a week.

Phew! Once a week? Sounds tiring! AND... PANDA TREK IS OPEN! YEAH!!! I love the new takin exhibit! Anyway, my route wouldn't really have you stop for any shows or activities, it'd just be a regular walk through the zoo. :)

It would have you start off by walking to your left, down to Discovery Outpost. Pass the Skyfari East to visit the Insect House (for those interesting little leaf-cutter ants!) and the Hummingbird House. Then, head past the Wegeforth Bowl and walk through the Reptile Mesa to watch the tortoises, gharials and other reptiles.

After stopping at the Reptile House, make your way up Easy Street, past the flamingos, and take a right at the Fern Canyon Trail just before the orangutans. Continue straight into the Sun Bear Trail, following it up to its end at the corner of Center Street and Park Way by the Canyon Cafe.

Head straight on up to the Eagle Trail, passing Panda Trek as you do so, then continue to follow Park Way while stopping at Polar Bear Plunge and at the other various exhibits of Polar Rim. Enter Elephant Odyssey and take in all it has to offer before sitting down at the Sabertooth Grill for lunch.

Once you've passed the condors and have exited Elephant Odyssey, stop at the kopje exhibit before you turn right up Park Way again, viewing the exhibits on your right. As soon as you pass the hornbill aviaries and porcupine exhibit by the escalators, take a sharp left and head back to where you came (if you don't mind), and take the Big Cat Trail downwards to get closer looks of the felines.

Before walking off Big Cat Trail, take a right and head down the Kiwi Trail and into Urban Jungle. Loop around that area to see the rhinos, giraffes and other animals. Take a left, walking all the way down to the camel exhibit before looping back around, this time going only as far as the koalas, before once again turning, this time up Center Street, where you'll pass the bear grottoes.

Head back onto the Fern Canyon Trail, passing through Owen's Aviary both times, then make your way around the bird cages adjacent to the gorillas (those symbolized by the cockatoo on the map ;)). Take a left down the side of the gorillas, then turn left again and walk through Parker Aviary. Stop by the orangutans before heading back up Easy Street, past the mandrills, then turn left on the Hippo Trail (before the restrooms).

Walk in between the gorilla and bonobo exhibits, circling around the Albert's Restaurant area so that you emerge from the northwestern side of the bonobos (well, northwestern on the map at least :o). Turn right and go down the stairs, but circle back through Scripps Aviary. Go right after the loop, once again passing the bonobos, and head through the alternate Scripps Aviary route. Find your way to the Monkey Trail, then stop halfway to use the elevator and get to ground level.

After using the elevator, keep to your right as you make your way up Tiger Trail. Turn left at Hippo Trail, then pass the okapi and river hippos, realizing you've pretty much finished your journey. Once you pass the Ituri Forest Outpost, otter/swamp monkey and buffalo exhibit, take a right and start heading down Park Way before making another right onto Center Street. Head all the way down, turning right at the koalas, then, unfortunately, walk towards the exits! :(/:D

How was that? Ever walked a route similar to that? Was it decent for a beginner's standards? :D

The zoo posted a video of the new set of exhibits:

It only shows the panda and takin exhibits. Also, are all the takins moving to the new exhibit or are there some left at the old exhibit?

Looks like another minimal-effort exhibit job at San Diego. Predictably disappointing. Great animals, important organizing concept, but zero attention to detail.

I love how the takin have more rocks to climb on, but nonetheless, there really isn't much foliage in there... There really is a lack of detail with San Diego, isn't there? As you said, they have fantastic species, but it seems like they don't know what to do with them and their exhibits...

Love those Chinese Eucalyptus in the background of the Takin exhibit! Throw in some bamboo and some ficus, and behold! China! Its not like the animals are found in alpine regions were there are conifers and deciduous trees.

All 7 takins are in the new exhibit. I uploaded a few pictures to the gallery. Unfortunately my camera ran out of memory.

Not bad, not bad at all. You even included two gems that most visitors miss, the hummingbird aviary and Fern Canyon Trail. If I am following your directions correctly you a have a few of the up/down directions wrong. For example you will be walking up Big Cat Trail and up Kiwi Trail. Just remember that the intersection of Park Way and Center Street in front of the Canyon Cafe is the bottom of the canyon so any direction you take from there will be uphill. I got a little confused (not unusual for me) around the gorillas and bonobo exhibits. If you are coming this summer you might be interested in knowing that the all gorilla troops are on exhibit through out the the day. Paul Donn's troop (6 gorillas) are on exhibit in the morning, Memba's troop (3 gorillas) are out after 1:00, and then Maka, the small but impressive silverback is out after 5:00. The same is true for the bonobos. Four females are out in the morning then between 1:00 and 2:00 they put 2 females (that don't play well with others) back inside. They let out 2 adult males, a 7 year old male and a 3 year old female. I also learned the a female giraffe is due any day. Although I try to walk that route once a week, I don't always succeed. If I ever get the chance to visit the Bronx Zoo I will be asking for your recommendations.

I got your back. Everything is on exhibit except another red panda male that is coming and the Mang Mountain vipers. Uploading photos now,

Thanks for clarifying the directions of the trails. The maps don't directly state whether or not you can backtrack, so I'll have to fix that part. I still have a while to plan before the visit. [And I do mean a while :D]

What, like how I go about actually walking the Bronx Zoo? Like my route? Because now that you mention it, my trip back earlier in June was a pretty simple route that turned out being my most successful visit route yet! Thanks! I'll be waiting for you to address me. :p

And also, thanks for giving me the schedules for the gorilla troops, that way I know what times are best for me to see a specific troop. *Yet another thing I can change on this still-developing route. haha ;)

Oh, yeah, I made sure that those two were in there. It's almost like SD's pretty much a garden with all of those exotic flora. :D I had to have that on my tour.
And I'd love to see some smaller birds like the hummingbirds and tanagers throughout the Hummingbird House. They say it's pretty exciting and enchanting! Sounds like something definitely worth checking out!

Thank you. I didn't know about the other red panda. Do you know where he is coming from?

Hopefully sometime soon! If not before the colder months, then you've got to have your eye on going at the start of next spring/summer.

It's always fantastic going there and I fail to let any negativity from those around me put a damper on the days I visit. It's a good 1 1/2 hour drive for me to the Bronx (although my hometown was Brooklyn, NY) and I'm always up at 5:30 for some reason... as if the zoo opens around 8:00! I guess I never lose the anticipation, either! :p
