I'm sorry, I don't have any exciting news, but is the African Wild Dog exhibit in Asian Passage only visible from the escalator ascending towards the entrance to Elephant Odyssey?

The African Wild Dog has been moved to the old Chinese Leopard exhibit. The Chinese leopard was moved to his new exhibit by the kopje.

African Wild Dogs in that old cage? What are they going to do about the exhibit they were moved from then? Put a playground?

It doesn't seem that the space is particularly well suited to African wild dogs. Certainly less so than it is for leopards.

Don't give them ideas :P

No one I asked had any idea what was going to happen to the old exhibit. I won't be surprised if they turn it into something they can charge more money for. :(

FYI, I just wanted to let anyone planning a visit to the zoo or park that children get in for free for the entire month of October every year. They used to have free admission on founder's day October 7th but the crowds and traffic were overwhelming so they changed it to the whole month. This is great if you enjoy watching kids at the zoo (which I do) but there are bus loads of school kids every day. Some are very well behaved, some are not. Just beware!

Are there large crowds of school groups on weekdays at the Safari Park, or just the zoo? (I have a couple days off later this month and was halfway dreaming about driving out there).

While kids are free at the Park also, I would imagine that there wouldn't be as many school groups. The Park just isn't as convenient as the Zoo as a lot of the school buses are from Mexico. I am planning to go next week, I will let you know what I observe.

I arrived at the Park at 10:00 am and asked at the parking booth about school groups for the day. There was only 1 scheduled to attend. I went to the Zoo the next day and I saw a least 10 groups of children. I hope you come and enjoy your visit. :)

@Betsy - thanks for the update. I am still undecided, but will need to decide tonight whether or not to make a motel reservation, since I would be leaving home day after tomorrow. (The fact that my local zoo has two and a half month lion cubs makes the decision even harder).

They usually have at least one. The zoo and the park are quite large, I wouldn't consider school group traffic an issue.

The jaguar, Nindiri, is pregnant!

Unfortunately, the outcome of the pregnancy was not a good one. I have no details but both the male, Guapo and the female, Nindiri are back on exhibit.

That is sad news, hopefully the polar bears will have a baby this year as the pregnancy hasn't been foiled yet.

Betsy have the Mang mountain vipers been moved to Panda Trek yet? I am curious to see if any upgrades have been made and if its still in this sad state: http://www.zoochat.com/39/p1020284-228707/

Also, would it be possible to see how the plants are growing in with some more photos?

EDIT: Also, some old news:

Apparently the zoo hopes to open a new exhibit for koalas and bring back Tasmanian devils by 2013.

Confession, I don't stop at the viper exhibit but I know they are in there because there is usually a crowd in front of the exhibit. I will take a picture next time I am there.

That looks better than vast majority of snake exhibits.

Tasmanian devils would be very cool.

It also mentions South African penguins.

But its a brand new enclosure that probably cost a ton of $ with awful fake rock. Its just a fake rock box with mulch, deadfall, and moss. Having seen the landscape that these vipers are from in documentaries and photographs, and their more authentic exhibit in the reptile house, the exhibit had a lot to work with but fell short.

EO's rattlesnake, Monkey Trail's, and the Reptile House exhibits are all fantastic, why isn't this that good? IMO, probably 70% of the SDZ's reptile terrariums are better than MOLA's terrariums of equal size. There aren't that many good photos in the gallery, but maybe I will take some when I get home in the winter.

I was at the San Diego Zoo today. It seems half the old takin exhibit is becoming a 4D motion simulator themed to the arctic. The other half will be an exhibit for maned wolf.

How totally logical....
Hope the ventilation system in the 4D theater is a good one, as there's little more pungent than a couple of maned wolves as neighbors....
