San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2014

When I was in elementary school we had a class play about the rainforest and a Cock of the Rock was one of the characters. It never occurred to us to make any jokes about it. We were immature, but obviously not mature enough to make bad jokes about it. And there was potential, it was played by a girl.

And a couple of other questions about my visit last June (7 months ago!!!):

-Can anyone ID the species in these photos?

-What species of turtle are kept with the African Slender-snouted Crocodile?

-What species of Two-toed Sloth is kept in Elephant Odyssey?

-What subspecies of Pronghorn is kept?

-Which subspecies of Asian Elephant are kept (Elephant database is down)?

Linne's
Peninsular and American (bachelor group)
Elephas maximus maximus and E. m. indicus

Not sure of the turtle

Thanks Ituri, the scientific names are sadly missing from a number of San Diego Zoo exhibit signs, especially Elephant Odyssey. Conversely, others seem a little too specific to be likely.

Any idea on the African Elephant subspecies? Mila is a L. a. africanus.

First bird is a immature metallic starling (Aplonis metallica)
Second bird is a Fire-tufted Barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus)

Does anyone know if the red-billed malkoha (Phaenicophaeus javanicus) is still on show?

Thanks Mr. Hope!

I didn't see it on my visit back in June.

Red-billed Malcoha no longer kept in the collection sadly. The last birds all died out, as has happened with many SE Asian species!
