San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2015

I don't have a very detailed route planned out,as normally I go about the zoo in a rather unstructured way, however I mostly start out with the reptile house+reptile walk, then go to Monkey Trails. From there I go from the tigers to hippos to the Leopards of Asia, then to eagle trail,up along the steep hillside, then to the row of aviaries beside Polar Bear Plunge (sometimes) then Polar Bear Plunge itself, then Elephant Odyssey. After EO I go to the kopje (which I don't think is open anymore),then to the Outback, urban jungle, and up bear canyon. Honestly there is no way to see the entire zoo without backtracking to some degree, which can be irritating. This route enables me to see everything I want to see, although it normally ends up causing me to miss the bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, and the aviaries, however alterations can be made to the route should you want to see those things. Up until this last trip I hadn't actually seen the pygmy hippos in a year, and I can't actually remember the last time I've seen the orangutans. I might have to carve a plan of attack to see the orangutans next time I go....

I just uploaded photos to the gallery that show a few changes happening at the zoo. First the lower flamingo lagoon has been drained and the birds relocated. This is to allow construction to cover the entire aviary because of the threat of avian flu. The moving sidewalk up to Elephant Odyssey has been removed and will not be replaced. The lion-tailed macaque exhibit is being renovated and the red cheeked gibbons will be relocated there.

Are the lion-tailed macaques being phased out then?

The primate keeper told me that there are plans to try and put the gibbons and macaques together. Not sure how that is going to work out.

Plans for a new children's zoo? I'm interested. Hopefully something nice will be done with the area.
