Beyond Facebook, it's also from a set of "activist" groups that think they know what's best about everything having to do with elephants. It's possible she passed, but I don't think so, as I've heard nothing and about her health.

According to a post on Elephant Managers, Asian elephant Sumithi has died at the San Diego Zoo. I have seen no public announcement; details when they become available. Sumithi was wild-caught in about 1967 and sent by Pinnewala to San Diego in 1968. She'd be around 50 (more or less) now.

Actually facebook wouldn't let me view the page, every time I tried they gave me a banner about one thing or another that no amount of hitting esc would banish.

My guess at this point is that she is still alive. San Diego is usually pretty quick about announcing the deaths of high profile animals (and by virtue of her being an Elephant I would say she is) especially now that we are in the internet age.
 
I have about 50 pictures of the centennial exhibit for the zoo, called The Lore Behind The Roar!, which is on view in the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park until early 2017, near the zoo. The exhibit includes some history of the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park as well. Since the exhibit is not actually AT the zoo, I am not sure which gallery I should post it in: San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo's Safari Park, create a gallery for San Diego History Center (I think this would be fruitless since it is unlikely it will ever have any other zoo or natural history exhibits in the future), or United States - Other (where I think it will be lost)...anyone have any opinions about this?
 
I think just upload them to the SDZ gallery geomorph. New galleries cannot currently be created, so that is not really an option, and putting them in US - Other would mean they would get lost. It would be ideal if they had a standardised title in some way, e.g. "Entry Area - San Diego Zoo Centennial Exhibition", so that they can be found and moved if appropriate. Looking forward to seeing the photos!

I like them myself, and they are very popular with visitors. Some ZooChatters, however, seem to take pride in being partial to rare or relatively unknown species, and I commonly hear griping about there being too much emphasis on "generic" species like meerkats when a lot of rare species are being phased out or generally ignored.

Where are the meerkats at San Diego? I don't remember seeing them on my trip two years ago.

3 weeks later and there's still no concrete source to confirm that Sumithi died. They have always been quite transparent about their elephants and most of the other animals so I have no doubt that this is just a rumor. I was supposed to be going to San Diego this weekend, but thanks to a mess-up with my paycheck, I had to cancel. Hopefully one of the zoo's frequent visitors can confirm that she's still around.
 
Sorry to burst everyone's bubble. I found out the answer, but was asked not to say it until the zoo made it public. Seeing as how that's not going to happen, I'll just post it now. After speaking to a regular who spoke to volunteers, Sumithi was indeed euthanized that Wednesday.
