The Zoo's 49 year old elephant, Sumithi, has died.
I can't find anything in the news on her dying, where did you find this out and when did she pass?

Facebook and I don't get along, so you're saying this is a rumor? I sincerely hope she is alive and well.

Rumor has it that Sumithi had died at the San Diego Zoo. We are waiting for confirmation.
.....
According to a post on Elephant Managers, Asian elephant Sumithi has died at the San Diego Zoo. I have seen no public announcement; details when they become available. Sumithi was wild-caught in about 1967 and sent by Pinnewala to San Diego in 1968. She'd be around 50 (more or less) now.

I don't understand why so many ZooChatter's dislike Meerkats. I really enjoy watching them, there is never a dull moment it seems.

Actually facebook wouldn't let me view the page, every time I tried they gave me a banner about one thing or another that no amount of hitting esc would banish.
Thanks for posting what it said.
My guess at this point is that she is still alive. San Diego is usually pretty quick about announcing the deaths of high profile animals (and by virtue of her being an Elephant I would say she is) especially now that we are in the internet age.
