San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo news 2022

Based on the zoos map, it looks like the penguins have moved to Bear Canyon. Is this a bird flu precaution? I know one of the grottos is netted over so perhaps its a move to prevent close contact with wild birds. The flamingos are also no longer shown as being in the front habitat by the zoos entrance, just the netted exhibit near the back of the zoo.

Yes, a staff member told me they are in the netted habitat on bear canyon due to the bird flu. They moved to the exhibit where the spotted necked otters used to be. Many bird species have moved and numerous exhibits have been netted. For example the aviaries in between bonobos and scripps is netted with the hamerkops and the African grey parrot from Scripps Aviary. The African darter was moved to the netted great white pelican exhibit and the wrinkled hornbill pair is also in the exhibit where palm cockatoos used to be in Australian Outback.
On the map it does show Giant Anteaters in Urban Jungle but the exhibit has a "animals off exhibit" sign inside.

Avian Flu is believed to be spread through bird feces so some zoos are only displaying birds covered by some sort of roof. I doubt they put a roof over one of the grottos but I also doubt they’re just out in the open. Did any of the other aviaries have roofs on them?

Can confirm the penguin enclosure had a roof on it.

One of the grottos has had a roof on it for some time.

Jasper the 25-year-old Mandrill was euthanized due to health issues.

Sad news. He was the second oldest male in the AZA.

San Diego are now left with just three Mandrills; Jasper’s former mate, Kesi, and their two sons, Ajani (2016) and Isoke (2018).
