Not to highjack the thread, but any particular rarities or notable animals I should keep an eye out on my next San Diego Zoo trip? I'm looking forward to seeing the hippos, polar bears, and geladas in particular.

I'm not the best person to answer this at all, but I know spot-necked otters are a fairly rare species held there.

Lord Howe Island stick insects are in the invertebrate house. Make sure that you see the invertebrate house, the hummingbird aviary, and the bee eater aviary in Africa Rocks. They are all must-see things.

I doubt that the pandas will be publicly visible until they are done with their quarantine and adjustment phase, which the zoo said will take several weeks. That puts their public debut sometime in August or September probably.

I thought the old panda habitats that you could see from the bridge would be the quarantine area, but maybe I'm mistaken.

I saw a photo of the bridge with barriers on the side of it that prevents people being able to look down into the panda exhibits.

Unless additional, taller barriers have been put up since my last visit, the tarps they have up over the railings now won’t completely stop people from being able to see the pandas from the bridge because the railings are only chest high.

They didn't add taller barriers, but they've added plastic crowd control barriers to stop people from being able to walk along the railing/ look over the railing. They're maybe 3-4 feet away from the railing itself and they have workers stationed there telling people to keep moving.

I think it has been mentioned before, but the next plan was to expand the polar bear habitat into the reindeer habitat.

All of the fish have been removed from the Cape Fynbos African penguin exhibit, not just the sharks. The penguins were harassing and injuring the sharks and other fish, so they were all removed.

The fossa are in the two tsingy exhibits across from the two mixed lemur exhibits in the Madagascar Forest portion of Africa Rocks.

During my visit last November I spoke to a docent who said that after sharks were removed they added a school of sardines which the penguins promptly disposed of. The docent indicated that this may be repeated occasionally as an ongoing enrichment program for the penguins.

That's a shame. I'm not a fan of animals being given live fish for enrichment.
