Lupe was putting on a show from 3pm to 4:30pm today. I watched probably 30 barrel rolls, splashing, and just being very active!!!

It was an absolute delight to see!! I can't wait to see all 3 girls out together!!

I don't know how to post videos here, but I have posted on Facebook and TikTok. Search those for #zooguy and it should pop up!!

According to recent import documents from Regulations.gov, San Diego applied for importation of 3 Fijian Iguanas. Specifically, 2 male Central Fijian Banded Iguanas and 1 male Lau Banded Iguana. They’re being held at a CITES Biodiversity office in Spain. Link is to documents.

I got another information. On page 277, it says San Diego also applied for the importation of 6 seized iguanas from Spain under the permit of PER5681188. The facility in Spain wants to export these 9 iguanas at the same time. Meaning that San Diego is receiving 9 iguanas? Also at the end of the document, it says "if the requested information is not received by this office by September 26, 2024, your application will be abandoned and administratively closed." It has already passed, does it mean the application has been abandoned? I know application can be reopened but you will need to pay and make a new one

I know that this whole document was on the docket by said date so maybe it’s published and accepted by that point. The website is down for maintenance but can check later. I know SD did apply for a similar permit to earlier in the year but I believe a few of the iguanas had passed then as they seemed to be part of a confiscation

The fact that the permit has been posted for public comment indicated that all requested information was received by USFWS. Pending final review given public comment, permits may or may not then be issued.

I am so grateful that you posted this!

I am so grateful that you posted this!

All 3 were out today, Lupe in the middle, Amahle to the left, Funani to the right. The glass area is blocked off, so not very good picture yet!

Each adult had moments of submission and dominance. Lupe did push Amahle back (Funani watched closely) across the glass to the right. Amahle pouted for about 25 minutes before returning near mom!

There were moments of force but no injury, and just amazing to see these girls figuring each other out!!

I have many videos on FB and TikTok but don't know how to share here. Look for #zooguy on those for my videos.

Again, I appreciate this deeply.
When Lupe arrived 20 years ago at Woodland Park, she joined two other hippos, and the jockeying immediately began but resolved quickly as there was a much larger matriarch hippo at the zoo, the fabulous Gertie, who got in there and clarified immediately how things were going to be done in the hippo pool.
I am grateful every day that San Diego was able to open its arms for our beauty. I know it is hard nowadays to place a hippo.

That's awesome to hear!! I have videos on Facebook and TikTok, search #zooguy and my video should show up!!

Today 10/22/24 Lupe to the left on her favorite spot on that rock. Amahle was napping just near Lupe (mom/Funani was to the far left) as Ama seems to want to be friends with Lupe.

The girls were much less active today, but still had a few quick movements and showing off teeth!!

I am not sure who will be the alpha as Lupe and Funani have been seen being submissive!!

A couple updates from the zoo:
- The Boelen’s Python Habitat in the Reptile House has been completely covered with signage indicating that it is being enhanced.
- The former Fishing Cat habitat has been partially covered with tarps. Unsure if any work is being done as it was home to a Spotted-Necked Otter.
- Lupe is being integrated with the other two hippos and a few altercations with Funani and Amahle have occurred.
- There is a major construction project going on behind Panda and the Northern Frontier ungulates. This revolves around the “behind the scenes” holdings and I’ve been told that there will be Bontebok breeding with the current male and new group of females after the completion of these areas. Also, this involves the former Maned Wolf habitat.

Another update at the zoo:
- According to the new map, the butterflies have been removed from the Spineless Marvels building. I didn’t think much of it on my last few trips but they have also removed the chain link curtains from the entrance and exit of that area.
So sad:(! It was one of my favourite exhibits at the zoo! What happened to the butterflies?
