San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2025

City of San Diego plans to charge for Balboa Park parking, including the Zoo

It seems like this news dropped today that the city council is coming up with a plan to charge for parking at Balboa Park, which includes the Zoo parking lot. They're still in the early stages of seeing how to implement it, but man, would that be unfortunate. I haven't visited the Safari Park yet but it says they charge for parking too, so having to pay for both park's parking now would suck.
Though it does sound like a lot of the higher-ups for Balboa Park are against it due to it driving away tourists/regulars, since you already have to pay for a majority of the museums inside the park, so hopefully the city listens and doesn't go through with this.

Oof I have a strong feeling that’s going to be one major complaint among locals and more so new guests. The perk of the zoo having free parking already was at the very least a good compromise on top of an already expensive admission fee. Just for the average family, tickets would be close to $300. Just having done a quick glance at Bronx and Omaha, the prices for a family is about half. I’ve not been able to renew my membership as other priorities have come up along and the price point has been a bit too high for me this year. It’s more a reflection of the current U.S. economic landscape but as someone who’s been a member since 2019, I’ve not had the rush to renew my membership and I feel like that this may affect attendance for some of their loyal visitors.

Fingers crossed it doesn’t happen, but I also hope it's not too expensive, since the Safari Park's parking costs $20, which isn’t too shabby IMO

I second this opinion, the free parking is a good offset to the $76 dollar adult ticket. And adult starts at age 12. So if you're a family of two adults and 2 junior high kids, you're shelling out over $300 just to get in the gate. That's steep, it's more than getting into the California Six Flags parks. Parking would be pushing insult to injury at that point. Going by yourself could potentially run you close $100 at that rate.

I also heard about the San Diego Zoo phasing out their sun bears for the Asian Passage expansion, will the Sloth Bears, Spectacled Bears, and Grizzly Bears still stay and get new exhibits?

What is the Asian Passage project that you are talking about? Is this a fantasy exhibit that people are inventing?

I did hear something about the Asian Passage expansion or redevelopment on here somewhere and rumors that they'll demolish the bear grottos for the Asian Passage expansion
