San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2025

@RJB Wildlife has posted another great video of updates on his Youtube Channel.

Below are the noteworthy updates (apologies if some have already been mentioned):

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp:
  • Spineless Marvels - Children's Stick Insects have been replaced by Giant Leaf Insects who were previously on the upper level.
  • Cool Critters - Amazon Milky Tree Frog have been replaced by another Axolotl. Sunburst Diving Beetles and the Green Anaconda there have also been removed from display. Hispaniola Boa have moved from their former habitat into the former Woma terrarium, and Mozambique Gridled Lizard have moved into the former Mexican Black King Snake Habitat.
  • The middle and left Rainforest habitats currently house a pair of Caracals who seemingly have access to both exhibits.

Lost Forest:
  • Monkey Trails - Lace Monitor has moved off display, and will soon be replaced with a Black Headed Python. Amazon Milky Tree Frogs have moved from Cool Critters, sharing their habitat with three Emerald Tree Boas.
  • A Kagu has also gone on display within the Aviary Trail.
  • Owen's Aviary is still a way away from opening.
  • Fishing Cat is off habitat currently for small renovations surrounding their habitat.

Northern Frontier:
  • 4D Theater will close soon.
  • The zoo was previously expecting two Bontebok offspring, but it's just one female that's expecting currently.

Polar Bear Plunge:
  • Collared Lories and a pair of Himalayan Monals are now in the Tundra aviary.

Elephant Odyssey:
  • The rattlesnake habitat has re-opened.
  • The last Llama has passed away, leaving a single Guanaco.

Africa Rocks:
  • The Honey Badger is gone, replaced with another new Fossa.
  • Underwater Penguin viewing is closed.

I know that there was plans, for at least a decade ago, to build a facility to put some of the tuataras on display, which was scrapped due to budget reasons. Is there still ”life” to those plans? Seems like a shame to not display them, although the species ligger not be recognised as special by the public.

As mentioned earlier it seems like the zoo is actively making the choice to hold tuataras off-display to help with breeding. Chances are we won’t see tuataras on exhibit for quite some time. The next two projects for the Zoo are updating polar plunge and building a new exhibit in Asia Passage.

It’s sad the 4D Theater will close down, but would make more space for future animal habitats.

What new exhibit is going into the Asian Passage?

What new exhibit is going into the Asian Passage?
Discussions have previously centered around transforming the current Urban Jungle/Bear Grottoes into a new Asian themed area; so not Asian Passage specifically.

However with no current director, it's obviously not confirmed. We'll just have to wait and see where the next one will decide to go with things once they're hired.

Is the Polar Bear Plunge specifically confirmed?
Not confirmed directly by the zoo. @RJB Wildlife stated in a post the following a post from earlier this year;
- The Polar Bear Plunge Project is rumored to begin after the Halgloween event this year. I’m being told that the focus will be centered around the kids play area and other interactive elements. The filtration system has been completely removed and the pool is drained every Monday.
