San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park 2018

I don't want to be too pessimistic, but I am not 100% sure May 26th is achievable based on my visit today. I would assume that animal introduction and stabilization in a new facility would need to happen sooner rather than later for May 26th, I really do not know much about that procedure in general, but I would say the construction is slightly behind. Not Africa Rocks behind, but a bit behind. You be the judge.

I think it's possible they can make the date. Many zoo exhibits look incomplete until the final month when construction suddenly speeds up and I have faith the zoo can make the opening. If it's getting delayed, it won't be by much. The zoo already has a listing on their website for a new "Roos and Mates" Behind-the-Scenes tour through Walkabout Australia. These tours start on June 29 so I think if it's delayed (Which I don't think it will be) we know the time frame of when it will open.

Anybody know the names, D.O.B., gender, precious placements of the Masai Giraffes.

According to the safari park’s social media accounts, Moka the smuggled tiger cub will be moving to the Lions,Tigers and Bears sanctuary.
Also, African elephant, Impunga, born at the safari park and in the group relocated in 2012 to Reid Park Zoo, has died of a twisted gut.

Out of nowhere except a well-publicised process...
Not really. The "public" process has been pretty much entirely within government transcripts in Australia, and an attempt to stop the export by the Australian Humane Society. There has been nothing released by either zoo at all until it went on the San Diego website five days ago. So from the viewpoint of almost any zoo-goer outside of this forum, it was completely out of nowhere.

Walkabout Australia is now open! and out of nowhere the safari park dropped this bombshell. Another exhibit is coming to the newly opened area, platypus pond.

Platypus Pond at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

A Platypus! That’s unexpected! I’ve been fortunate enough to see Platypus twice before in Australia, so they won’t be a must-see for me, but Platypus are truly wonderful animals, and will undoubtedly be a big draw for the park. I bet many a zoochatter will be frantically trying to book a flight down to San Diego, with this news!

On a side note, the rest of Walkabout Australia looks quite good, and I’m glad they completed it on time. Have any Zoochatters visited yet?

It's actually ahead of schedule! Original date was June.

I was invited to attend the media preview and have posted a few photos in the gallery.

Your photos are fantastic. The exhibit complex looks impressive. I was skeptical about it being completed on time, but I am more than glad to have been overly pessimistic in my opinion.

Looking forward to a visit during this or the next weekend.
