San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park 2020

in the space where there is currently a picnic area near the current exhibit observation area
This is the old observation area for the African Savvanah correct? If so did they talk about how the zipline exit will fit into these plans. Also did they say how they would connect elephant valley and Lion Camp. I know somewhere between the two is a protected garden so I was wondering if they would go through it or around it.

EO is not going to change soon with the elderly Asiatic elephants they still have. If and when these pass on and the Big If Question if they intend to continue with elephants - I would think given the iconic and regal nature of observing elephants they might -, then major upgrades on the facility might come through to enable SDZ to start with a breeding herd of elephants. That is as yet very much a long way off reality.

The Safari Park has had the fortune being able to work with a young group of African elephants - and imported (!!! - darn I wish the whole CITES crappy issue would go away as far as live elephants is concerned) new elephants from the wild -, it was able to design with having a large breeding group on site! Thus everything about the place was created with this in mind. In that, SDSP has a huge step ahead of their city major.
Oh don’t get me wrong, I personally wouldn’t want to see EO changed regarding their elephant exhibit. It’s a retirement home for elephants and it continue to be so for their future herds of elephants perhaps coming mostly from SDZSP. Now it’s time for their elephants to shine more and have a wonderful home, this will put the SDZSP amongst the very best in the country although I think it already is :)

I didn't know that the park had a tiger named Diburu but it probably is Debbie, the descriptions match. If so, they should have 5 left now.
0.1 Majel
0.1 Joanne
0.1 Diane
0.1 Cathy
1.0 Rakan
I had seen that on Twitter and I didn’t recall a tiger by that name either although I think you’re right that it is indeed Debbie since it looks like her and the age is the same. Also Debbie could be her “American name” so it can be pronounced easier but who knows  I hadn’t seen her on my last visit and they didn’t name her off when I was talking to the docents.

I'm not sure but I think the savanna viewpoint and zipline and small garden are just beyond the project scope. They did not address how exactly the renovation will connect to the existing Lion Camp.

I know earlier this year In some news article that Cathy and Debbie were supposed to move earlier this year but because of the coronavirus pandemic the move was delayed
The tiger cub born 14 Sep 2015 named Suka and the male cub of the litter of 3 born 28 Jan 2016 named Nelson were both sent to Lincoln, Neb. and renamed Kumar and Axl, although which one is which I do not know. Incidentally, the names in the SB for the 4 cubs from Joanne's two litters are Suka, Nelson, Cathy and Debbie. As I understand it San Diego names animals born there by offering the naming rights to zoo sponsors i.e. Joanne after Joanne Warren and Majel in memory of Majel Barrett-Roddenberry (whose son contributed to the funds for the tiger enclosure). Wouldn't those sponsors be upset that the names they chose are being changed as soon as the animal moves elsewhere?

This is a common practice amongst many zoological facilities to raise additional funds, especially with notable births or arrivals. With that, that’s a risk you run in doing so. Facilities should be explaining to their donors that there are no guarantees that these animals will stay at the facility for life or that they will keep their chosen name for life. Whether or not the donor absorbs and understands that is another matter. At a previous facility I worked with we received an animal who was renamed upon arrival by a donor. We later found out that when she arrived at the facility she resided at previously, she was also named by a donor, and that donor was indeed, quite upset to learn that she had been moved and renamed. It’s all about proper communication.

I completely agree here about communicating to donors about name changes being possible if sent out to another facility or changed by another donor. Perhaps there should be a rule as to changing the name of an animal once they’ve already been named or just be very upfront with donors as to their name change and that it can occur. But then again, it is a donation out of their own voluntary will and not a product they’re buying.

San Diego Zoo and Safari Park will now require reservations for memberships to visit either park. There may be an error with their system right now in trying to get reservations.

Today the Living Desert will reopen as a "recreational activity" because of their hiking trails which means there is a chance the Safari Park could reopen because they have the World Garden trails. It isn't likely but I just wanted to let everyone know there is a chance.

I attended today's 10 AM virtual roundtable hosted by Paul Baribault, President and CEO of San Diego Zoo Global. Some interesting information included:

Wild Holidays decorations are still up at the Safari Park, even though the park is currently closed. If the park is allowed to reopen in early to mid-January, the event might be extended through the end of January on the weekends.

The Saving the Northern White Rhino project is projected to have a higher budget in the coming year if gate (admissions) and donations increase. The Nikita Khan Rhino Rescue Center still holds 6 adult female Southern white rhinos, as well as 3 calves. Two of the calves were born there: Edward is over a year old and gained 161 pounds in the last 7 days to reach over 2000 pounds. Future is a year old and gained 123 pounds in the last 7 days to reach over 1500 pounds. Both are participating in training sessions alongside their mothers. The third calf was not born to any of the 6 females at the center; instead, Arthur was born to a rhino in the regular field exhibit but he developed an infection and had to be separated. Once he was better, he was not releasable back into the field exhibit (too young and vulnerable still) so he is housed at the rescue center and adult female Libby is acting as his surrogate.

Elephant Valley renovation is still planned to be the next big capital campaign - no surprise since it was just announced recently - but it will only start once funding is in place from donors. After that, construction is projected to be 18-24 months.

No government assistance has been received for the two government-mandated closures since the organization is too large to qualify.

Do you know who the mother of Arthur is?
