San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park News 2014

The latest issue of the ZooNooz says that the new tiger exhibit is opening in May 2014.

Imani the gorilla has given birth to a baby girl via an emergancy c-section. She was having trouble delivering and the decision was made to save the baby who is in intensive care right now receiving oxygen and fluids. Imani is recovering nicely. Hopefully mom and baby can be put back together soon.

Rare Emergency C-Section Performed on Gorilla at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

I was so hoping that Imani would have a easy birth and that this baby could be parent raised. Imani is so maternal with her nephew Frank.

Well I hope they can return the baby fast so Imani can rear her without assistance. But the good thing is she has been trained in the past to rear Frank so even if the baby needs to be bottle fed they should be able to get her up to speed on the procedure again rather fast. Shes got the skills. They would just need to remind her. But if the baby stabilizes fast that might not be necessary. Hopefully baby will be ready for mom fast.

Ok I will but only because it was you who asked Betsy. LOL. I think the little one will be okay. Just sounds like shes had little bit of a bumpy entry into the world and they are being cautious because of that. But your usually far more informed that others when it comes to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. Is there something you know that the articles dont say?

Hopefully the baby will pull through. Such a rough start for the little one. Im going to hope theres better news on her condition tomorrow. If she makes it she will have quite a fan club who have been pulling for her from the start and will adore watching this little fighter grow.

Does anyone have any information on the Sungazers: Smaug giganteus (previously Cordylus giganteus) kept at San Diego Zoo?

Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Hi Frazer, as far as I know there is a single sungazer kept in a terrarium with pancake tortoises in Monkey Trails. There used to be several in a large open exhibit in reptile mesa but they have been taken off exhibit.

You are so right Betsy. You can see how sickly she looked when she was so grey and her eyes just looked dull. Fastforward a week and shes a healthy black, furry and her eyes just shine with life. It's so great to here she saw mom and the others. Hopefully but this time next week we can celebrate her return to the troop.
