Supposedly they are transforming the current black rhino facility into the white rhino AI center. I do not know where the black rhinos will be put. This information came from a friend who was told it on a recent tram tour of the African section, so San Diego is making it public knowledge.

Big news from the elephant herd. Musi has been transferred to Fresno Chaffe. At 11 its been decided its time for him to move on and be introduced to potential mates. Hopefully he will be as successful as his surrogate dad Mabu.

God willing we see an Elephant calf in Fresno sometime in the next few years, I hope they get along.
Any calf born to Musi will be huge. His father is a wild male. His mother was already pregnant with him when she arrived in the US. Adding him to the breeding population will be like adding a wild born male. It will be fantastic for the bloodlines in the US.
Northern White Rhino, Nola, is continuing to have problem with the abscess on her hip. They are doing more testing to see whats going on.

Nice article with only one minor factual error. They state that Fresno Zoo director Scott Barton has experience because he was director of Reid Park Zoo when the Safari Park transferred five elephants there. In fact Scott was the curator, not the director, and I believe he had already moved to Fresno by the time the elephants arrived (though he would have been involved in some of the early planning).

Do you think it likely Swazi, Ndlula and Umngani will be bred from again or is it more likely that the next calves will be from Kami and Khosi once they are old enough to breed? I guess they also will have to sort homes for all their male calves as well.
They are hoping for more calves from Swazi, Ndlula and Umngani. Sure they had bred with Mabu enough but Msholo was brought in to breed with them. He is unproven as a breeder thus far. His genetics are totally unrepresented. He is even better then keeping Musi who has a mother and half brother. Msholo could breed with Kami and Khosi in the future too. Kami would be the preferred one since her mother is dead and her baby brother wont be breeding for a good while.
The tiger cub has been pulled for hand rearing after he lost weight and Joanne lost interest in him.
