San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park News 2022

This is such heartbreaking news! Mina, Etosha, and Izu have all passed away within months of one another. I will miss all of them very much (and Oshana) but I hope they all rest in peace. My heart goes out to all their caretakers! :(

I’m assuming the park will be looking to receive a new group of lions sometime soon but it’ll be very strange going to a Lion Camp with a whole new pride of lions.

It's just been a devastating past few months at Lion Camp as one by one we lost Mina, Etosha and now Izu after losing Oshana last year. I'm hoping that the next pride includes one of their descendants.

I didn’t know Mina had died. I knew Oshana did last year and Estosha passed not that long ago but wow. Really is an end of an era for the Safari Park. I saw all 4 Estosha, Mina, Oshana and Izu only a couple times but it was a memorable experience. I know they all lived long life’s but my heart is breaking for the keepers there. That leaves the park with no lions anymore which makes it all the more devastating.

It is the end of an era for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park -- the last gaur at the park has passed away.

wow, I didn’t know that either until now but I just saw this. What a sad time for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The Giant elands are gone, their Indian Guar are gone, some of the parks more rare animals are gone now, and they no longer have lions anymore either. Just heartbreaking all of it.

There's a few different reasons here - the eland owners were being difficult to work with so most of them have been returned.
Much of the rare hoofstock leaving is on decision of the new management - don't expect the park to remain a rarity powerhouse.

The Giant elands are gone,
I've been meaning to ask about this for a while, but what the hell happened to the parks giant eland herd? They had like 20 something individuals a few years ago and now they're down to none? Where did all of those animals go?

EDIT - crossposted with @Great Argus so just ignore this part :p.
and they no longer have lions anymore either. Just heartbreaking all of it.
I'm sure it's only for a very short amount of time. A new pride will likely arrive within the the near future or at least a few new individuals. On the upside, perhaps the striped hyenas that rotated with the lions will be out more until then.

Does this leave both San Diego parks with only the lone female in elephant odyssey? Also is there any chance Izu and his siblings will be replaced with Izus cubs?

Right now as it stands, Ernest and Miss Ellen are the only lions within the SDZWA collection. Both are Izu’s children at Elephant Odyssey. Just speculating but perhaps they will have lions sooner than we realize back at Lion Camp, they’re such a staple for the Safari Park so maybe a new pride or any of the former Lion Camp cubs can make their way back. Honestly, I’d rather see Ernest and Miss Ellen at the Safari Park compared to the Zoo.

The only animal they have at the Safari Park that can go on exhibit would be the lone Striped Hyena, it’s sibling passed away. But I was told before that the striped hyena is really shy so perhaps not the best option to fill the massive void left by the pride :/

In happier news, the female generic giraffe calf born on February 1st has been named Msituni. She had a rough start to life as her front limb was bending in the wrong direction and was suffering from hyperextended carpi. She was given braces in order to correct the issue and after 10 days, they were removed and she was doing much better. Since then she has been reintroduced to the herd and is doing well.

The park had another female calf born on January 31st to adult female, Yamikani, who has now been named Nuru. Unfortunately, Msituni's mother (does anyone know her name?) did not take her daughter back but Msituni has been spending a lot of time with auntie Yamikani and half-sister Nuru.

BREAKING: it was announced on the San Diego Zoo Safari Parks Instagram that Livia, a Southern White Rhino at the Nikita Khan Rhino Rescue Center is pregnant and due July 2022! She got pregnant through natural breeding but I don’t know who the father is. I know J Gregory lives at the Rhino Rescue Center currently but the San Diego Zoo Safari Park didn’t say if he was the father or not.

Had a nice visit to the park today and noticed a lot of changes so I have a long list of updates. I apologize in advance for the length of this post!

-There are a pair of Blue cranes in Mombassa Lagoon now. I saw them in the area with the Pink-backed pelicans and Coscoroba swans.
-Several changes have occurred in Nairobi Village since I last visited the park and the whole area looks more empty now unfortunately. The black-footed cats have been taken off habitat (they should still be held bts) and Newman the sand cat has moved into their habitat. His former habitat was empty and signage was taken down (I'm assuming a new species is coming).
-The remaining terrariums in the village contain Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec, Pancake Tortoise, Woma (in two terrariums), and Madagascar Tree Boa. There were at least 2-3 empty terrariums unfortunately, so I'm hoping they get some new inhabitants soon.
-The Southern Pudu are now living in the former Red-flanked Duiker habitat (which used to hold Tufted Deer) and the duiker have moved into the former pudu yard. The new pudu habitat was under maintenance and the animals were off habitat.
-The aviary behind the petting zoo/Nairobi Village area no longer holds Bali Myna or Snowy-crowned Robin-chat. Instead, it holds some unsigned Fischer's lovebirds and White-crested Laughingthrushes now.
-There is a breeding pair of Red-flanked Duiker in the habitat they share with Gerenuk, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, and Demoiselle Crane. They were exhibiting breeding behaviors and I was glad to see them doing well in this habitat because the last time I visited, there was only a single individual in this enclosure that was pacing a lot in the back of the habitat.
-The park is down to 1.3 gerenuk (at least on habitat) which was unfortunate to see because I noticed (from looking at my photos) that as recently as last summer, the park had at least 6 females in their herd. Not sure if the other females were sent elsewhere or they all died, I'd hope it is the former since the US population isn't doing too well at the moment.
-The red river hogs were nowhere to be seen and all the signage had been taken down. Not surprising though considering how tiny their on-show yard was.
-The park has had an East African Sitatunga calf born recently! I saw a group of 4 sitatungas (including the calf) in the front of their habitat by the tram loading station for the first time ever. They're almost always hiding in the very back of their habitat so it was a nice surprise to see the group up close and personal (especially the calf)!
-A pair of Cape Buffalo were in the Grevy's Zebra habitat and I did not see any zebra or other antelope in there. Not too sure what's happening there...
-The Somali Wild Ass herd was nowhere to be seen and the tour guide only mentioned the dromedary camel that lives with the wild asses. A friend who visited recently also didn't see them a week or two back so I'm assuming they've moved them off habitat for the time being.
-A bachelor herd of Sitatunga has been moved into the Central Africa enclosure. Lots of bachelor herds in that enclosure with Grevy's Zebra, Greater Kudu, Roan Antelope, and now Sitatunga. The only females in there are the female herd of Uganda Kob and the female Black Rhino.
-Exciting rhino news! According to our tour guide, Black Rhinos Kendi and Aria were seen breeding about 6 months ago and keepers are hoping that Aria is pregnant. The tour guide also mentioned the park has the national record for most black rhino calves which I'm not too sure is true. The park has only had around 15 calves iirc and I'm pretty sure there's some zoo in the country that's had more Black Rhino calves than that (Cincinnati perhaps?).
-I spotted a pair of female gazelles in the African Forest enclosure on the other side and I'm fairly certain they were the park's remaining two red-fronted gazelles.
-A Defassa Waterbuck calf was born a few weeks back. I'm glad the park is continuing to breed this species since they are the only holder in the nation iirc.
-I asked a docent at Lion Camp what their plans were and was told they will be getting some new lions as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the park's spotted hyena was not on habitat and they had just left the habitat empty with a docent to inform guests about the lions being gone.
-The former coati habitat is still empty but they have added some ropes and climbing structures so it looks like it will be some sort of (small) primate species that'll be inhabiting the enclosure.
-There are a bunch of babies in the Condor Ridge/Walkabout Australia area with a bunch of burrowing owl chicks, 4 bighorn sheep lambs (plus one being hand-reared in the nursery), and a bunch of kangaroo and wallaby joeys.
-The Wings of the World Aviary no longer holds Mindanao Bleeding Hearts or Eastern Crested Guineafowl. Southern Bald Ibis and Reichnow's Helmeted Guineafowl have been added to the aviary and I was told by Coelacanth18 that there are unsigned White-crested Laughingthrushes in there but didn't see any myself.
-I was told (by Thylo I think?) that WoW no longer holds Northern Purple Roller but they were still signed. I didn't see any though so is them still being signed just a mistake?
-A pair of Abdim's Stork chicks have hatched recently in the WoW aviary.

That’s amazing news regarding Aria! I really hope she’s pregnant in addition I think it will be nice for the Safari park to have a new lion pride. In my opinion getting a new dog for example after my last dog passed away was really a nice distraction and eased the grieving process a bit. That sounds silly but that’s what helped me anyway.

A lot of interesting points noted during your visit, A few things to note:

-it would be a Striped Hyena at Lion Camp, either Tuli or Puru are the only residents left behind. I don’t think they go out on habitat during guest hours :/

-I was told on my Rhino Tour a month ago that Kendi and Aria only had a few interactions due to Aria being larger than Kendi and would become quite annoyed with him so I don’t know if they’ve bred since I asked and it seemed like they hadn’t yet. I’d love be dead wrong and to see a Black Rhino calf though!

-you are absolutely correct about the Waterbuck calf, I believe the Defassa’s Waterbuck was born a day or two prior to my last visit in April and I do have a photo of it, I’ll post one tomorrow :)

That would make sense as Kendi isn’t even 5 yet. Very young for a male rhino to be successfully breeding especially with a female that’s several years older. I believe it’s occurred before but it’s not very common so perhaps she is pregnant or perhaps my tour guide was just mistaken.

I saw the herd when I visited two weeks ago, so if so that's a very recent change.
