San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park News 2023

Ah ok! I thought you meant they were housed separately or something. Thank you for the replies and clarification.

Time to book a plane ticket I guess haha.

A cloned male Przewalski's horse foal was born on February 17th. This foal is a genetic twin to Kurt, the first cloned Przewalski's horse foal born in 2020, making this foal the world's second successfully cloned Przewalski's horse.

The foal is currently at ViaGen Pets & Equine in Texas and will be moved to the facility later in 2023.

What is meant by "cloned"? I don't really know what it is but thought that there were a lot of arguments about how humane the process is.

New breeding bulls for the fringe-eared oryx and Thomson's gazelle herds have been introduced to the East Africa field exhibit. There are now multiple Arabian oryx calves and Nubian ibex kids in their hillside exhibits around the Asian field exhibits.

Great to hear!

Visited yesterday and here are a few notes:

  • Walkthrough aviary near Hidden Jungle is open and filled with the bird residents from Hidden Jungle. Signage by Hidden Jungle indícate birds will be returned to the space.
  • Bo, formerly Boma, the African Lion was on exhibit during visit, rotating out with the females. Keepers are keeping an eye on him as he is timid at times. The females were out most of the day, he was on exhibit for about an hour.
  • It appears an unsigned Kagu is on exhibit, the small aviary closest to former Lemur Walk. Did see it last month as well, this visit was able to see it a bit longer.
  • There’s a new demonstration of ambassador animals at the Benbough Amphitheater called Journey into the Wild, lasts about 20 minutes and begins at 2 PM.

To add to @Julio C Castro’s updates:

Per the park’s photography Facebook page, a male Masai giraffe calf was born in the South Africa habitat on Monday to dam “Zindzhi” and sire “Gowan”.

All of the sitatunga from the exhibit in African Outpost have been moved to the African Forest field exhibit, and the gerenuk herd has been moved into that exhibit. The former gerenuk habitat is now serving as an additional okapi habitat.

Matschie’s tree kangaroo joey announced:

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Welcomes Endangered Kangaroo Joey – NBC 7 San Diego

Born to proud parents Arona and Bek, Kikori the Matschie’s tree kangaroo marks an exciting milestone since her birth is the second time her species was born at the Safari Park.

Although little Kikori was born in August 2022, the Safari Park made the announcement Thursday.
There’s a posting I made about it from March, she had began poking her head out around that time :)
