Amazing news! Just went to the park today, and the path leading from the African Savannah up to the Tiger Trail has just been reopened! You don’t have to backtrack back up the elevator to go from the Savannah up to the Tiger Trail, Walkabout Australia, and Condor Ridge, now the path allows you to go back and fourth from Elephant Valley and the Savanah to the Tiger Trail as you please. Apparently it was just opened up this Monday.

You can barely spot a piece of the Asian Savannah from the Tiger Trail now, I spotted a Przewalski horse!
Is this the path that's been blocked off by that sign advertising future access to the Asian field exhibits for the last decade?

Could be the same?

The Pathway would head straight to the elephants in which in the New Elephant Valley area would be open next year.

This could bring new potentials for asian or afrcian side habitats or reviving the tram access to the Asian Fields?

It might be, the path begins right in front of the garden in front of the current elephant space, an open gate, then ends at the entrance of Tiger Trail

I could definitely see enough room being there to add a few new exhibits for the Asian animals that never made it in the final version of Tiger Trail (binturong, hornbill, Sarus Crane, tufted deer) or maybe room for a new Gibbon or tapir exhibit? That or maybe an African Painted dog or dhole exhibit like the ones the park never got?

VERY small view of about 20 feet worth of the Asian savanna , on a pice of the cliff side about 50 or more feet across from a viewing platform on Tiger Traul surrounded by a fence, by chance I saw an Onager grazing there by the fence before it turned and walked out of view
That would be a Przewalski’s horse not an onager, as the Park does not have onagers. The Przewalski’s horse exhibit is on the hillside closest to Condor Ridge and Tiger Trail.

Can you see any of the Asian Safari animals from that path?
There are a couple of other places along the trail between Tiger Trail and Condor Ridge as well as from Kalima Point overlooking East Africa that you can catch glimpses of some of the Asian field exhibits and their inhabitants if you know to look for them.

Definitely not dholes, as the Park is sending their last dholes to Canada. The old dhole exhibit (former big cat exhibit along the old monorail) is currently home to the rescued cougar cubs the Park took in last year.

Bugger. I wonder why they don’t build a walking trail out to the Asian area? The tram is great and the tours are absolutely worth the money, but it l would be great to be able to just stand and watch/take photos of the animals.

Will that happen?

The issue with the lesser flamingo most flocks are unevenly balanced and favoring males over females (an accident waiting to happen when importing the birds).

Sometime before (2019) Oakland Zoo only had 16.4 (and even before that only an all male flock). The prime breeders Forth Worth and San Diego are over time trying to have all other zoos more evenly sex age ratio bird flocks elsewhere. With the new 7 female immigrants. I assume the birds may be more induced to select a mate of the opposite sex and start / initiate breeding behaviour.

Will that happen?
I would not count on it anytime in the next five years, if at all, I’m just speculating based on the binturongs, tufted deer, and birds being scrapped back when Tiger Trail was built. For the next two years the park will most likely be prioritizing their Elephant Valley exhibit, and I’m sure they already have other plans already planned. I think San Diego Zoo is going to update their polar bear exhibit, so they might end up prioritizing their funds there next

Elephant Valley would open next year in 2025.

What parts does the Polar Plunge need updating with or is it the Rest of the Northern Frontier Area? I thought they would update parts of the Zoo like Urban Jungle or Bear Grottos?

Shortly after it was announced that rescued polar bears could now enter the breeding population, the zoo announced in a member email that they would be renovating their current polar bear exhibit in response. I would not expect anything major from this renovation — I expect it to include renovations of the behind-the-scenes holding and likely repurposing of the former reindeer exhibit as a third outdoor polar bear space. The zoo has larger plans for its next major project. I believe there is more discussion of the polar bear project in the San Diego Zoo’s news thread, which is where such discussions should take place.
