San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo Species List - May 2022

Does anyone know 100% if the native herps signed in the outdoor open-top exhibit by Elephant Odyssey are part of the collection? I'm guessing at least the turtles are.

How don't smaller herps kept in these enclosures like the Jewelled Lizard not escape and do zookeepers have to round them up every night to make sure they don't get killed by the elements or wild animals? They are quick and habitats are very naturalistic so it can be too hard to catch them.

Apparently still signed but I thought it's been dead a couple years now?

I didn't see one, so that's certainly possible.

Sorry for the very late response, but based on my most recent visit to the zoo (July 22, 2022; approximately two months after this list was created) I can confirm that the White-Collared Kingfisher (at least back then) was still alive and well inside Owen's Aviary. Looking through my photos, I realized I actually photographed the bird but somehow overlooked it. It was perched nearly 30 feet up in a tree, but looking through my pair of binoculars, I could confirm it was the kingfisher. The picture is pretty blurry, but you can still see the signature white underbelly and blue feathers on its back.

It may or may not still be present (since I haven't been back to the zoo since and nobody else has recently reported it), but I thought this would be something noteworthy to announce anyway.

Nice - I wonder if it's just little seen because of hanging out up high.

I believe now the reindeer are all gone, if I have heard reliably.

This is correct, yes.
