San diego zoo used to have a breeding pair/group of black rhinos. Now they have one very depressing male Indian rhino that lives on Elephant Mesa. Elephant Mesa, for those of you who haven't been houses the zoo's elephants. They have 2 female asian elephants and a female African elephant. Elephant Mesa also houses Baird's tapir, Capybara, Meerkats and when I last went had Visayan warty pigs, Pygmy hippos and a malayan tapir.
The wild animal park on the other hand has 4 rhino species/subspecies. They have only one of 2 captive Northern white rhino herds, the largest Indian rhino herd registered to ISIS and have bred over 100 Southern white rhino. The Wild animal park also keeps black rhinos. I suppose the reason for the wild animal park to have so many rhinos is the amount of space. But could'nt the zoo get a female to be paired with it's male? couldn't they change the rhino species back to black and try to breed them again?
 
Jonathan, The San Deigo zoo used to house it first pair of Indian rhinos at the zoo where they found they had some mangement problems with them which they think was due to lack of space, they had never bred at the zoo. However when they were transfered to the San Deigo wild animal park they were placed in an exhibit thats was around 100 acres and have since then bred more than 50 calfs, they were aiming at from the start to house around three bulls and ten cows there and i think the current numbers are about 16 with the latest babies.

The White rhino herd has been a huge success and has you say with the birth of more than 100 calfs, the large group of 20 arrived at the park from south Africa in 1970 to join the pair which was also transferes from the zoo to make a herd of 22, the adult bull from the zoo became the breeding bull for the herd untill he was transfered to anonther zoo to make way for a young bull from south Africa to take over that roll. The Whipsnade zoo in the UK had also imported 20 White rhinos from South Africa only a short time before the American shippment and if i remember they have bred over 50 calfs.

The Black rhinos at the San Deigo wild animal park were never there in big numbers from what i can remember they only had one breeding pair of adults
 
As well as this they are spreading their females to Indian zoos as they have very few females in their captive groups.

Black rhinos, According to ISIS, they only have 1.2
 
Sadly one of the wild animal parks northern white rhinos has died. They think that it is of old age but it may mean that there are only 13 in the world as there are only an estimated 5 in the wild.
 
The Frozen zoo were concentrating more on the southern white rhino, and Trying to breed captive born females. I believe that the northern whites at San Diego Wild animal park had not bred and were not being planned to breed. The females are/were very old.
 
They have two male Indian rhinos who are about three years old named Soman and Surat. They are both brothers and were born up at the Wild Animal Park.

The Wild Animal Park has three Black Rhinos. One adult male, Jambia who is around nine. A female named Lembe who is around eleven, and a calf named Bolwazi who is 10 months old. Hope this helps!

San Diego have a female Indian Rhino named 'Tanaya' who is coming to Chester in Spring to join their male Baabu(unsure of spelling)in an attempt to breed them:)

You probably mean the SDWAP, not the zoo. The pair at the zoo are both brothers for display and interactive means.
 
It is pretty old hat. The rhino is en route to be imported. When is a completely different question alltogether. Just wait and see when she gets in at Chester.
 
The San Diego Zoo used to have a pair of Sumatran rhinos. They also had a lone Indian rhino and 1 or 2 black rhinos. It was interesting to compare the species. One Sumatran rhino died suddenly and they had to euthanize the other one shortly thereafter for kidney failure. A tragic time! They were fascinating creatures. They squealed- very vocal. There was a sign up warning visitors to beware of their spray. Apparently they could shower visitors whenever they felt the urge, though I never observed this behavior. Not very well behaved zoo beasts, but that added to their coolness factor for me.
