I think so too. The exhibit is too small for more than one adult Nile Hippo, but pretty decent for Pygmy hippos if they just add a little more land space

The Zoo will be acquiring Pygmy Hippos, but current ridiculous plan is to hold them in Hippo area temporarily, and then put them in Madagascar exhibit, whatever year that will be done. They are allegedly claiming Pygmys come from Madagascar. Dwarfs came from Madagascar but are extinct. Its a comedy ahow.

Are you alluding to the sub-fossil record for Madagascar and extinctie Hippotamus taxa?

I guess this is meant to showcase Madagascar's past, present and potential future...? Either way, what seems like a veritable replacement for nile hippos (with the habitat itself having a good sized land area) ending up in a seemingly counterintuitively placed habitat, just seems odd. Then again, the zoo is no stranger to hodgepodge/mishmash exhibit areas, having chimps, wolverines, komodo dragons and an Indian rhino (Gauhati!!!) residing in the Pachyderms building along with the entirety of that zone being called CAT KINGDOM despite there being more hoofstock/birds than CATS... At this rate, if I ever go to San Francisco and I had to pick a zoo to go to, I'd wholeheartedly pick Oakland over San Francisco.

Any idea on SF Zoo plans for the immediate future to make it less hop scotch?
Were they also not in the midst of a masterplanning exercise?

For much of the last decade, the Zoo has made several plans and then scaled back or cancelled them. At one point the Zoo was planning for a North American region exhibit over by the Grizzlies, but those plans mysteriously evaporated. Same thing with a Squirrel Monkey Exhibit on the side of the South American tropics building. And the Orangutans were going to have a whole new area.
The Zoo lacks direction because any new project is going to be funded by wealthy donors who prioritize new exhibits with new species, rather than focusing on and improving the exhibits for animals that the Zoo already has.
The Zoo is in need of new management- someone with animal experience and who's willing to take a pay cut. While the current director helped get the Zoo back on its feet in the wake of the tiger attack and economic recession, she doesn't seem to have any direction for the zoo.

What a bumper....

Did they do any Masterplan right?

The one that they did in the 90s that resulted in the Lemur Forest, African Savannah and new entrance village was the most thorough one they’ve had recently. The part of that plan that didn’t come to fruition was the Great Ape Forest exhibit for Chimpanzees and Orangutans next to the Gorillas

San Francisco Zoo has announced the passing of 18 year old Leanne/Skylar. She's the mother of Jillian at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Berani/Burung at Zoo Miami, Kami Sambol at Oklahoma City Zoo and Jae-Jae at Tierpark Berlin.

it would be great if oakland took over like how bronx controls central park zoo oaklands ceo has made some great changes to the place like the california trail sf has lots of potential with great management

i hope they bring back polar bears (in a better enclosure and keeping the black bears) also i heard fossas will be coming to the lemur area (in a different enclosure luckily)

A mated pair of Fossa's have been at the Zoo for over four years. Another Animals acquired without there being an appropriate place for them. They lived near a year in the Hospital after quarantine, then shuffled to an off exhibit area called short string (updated and now housing Francois Langurs) to live in rusted cages, before landing at the off exhibit area FCC (the former Feline Conservation Center), where they have been for thre years.

The Zoo cries poor, can't even afford to give the Orangutans a decent home, or pay to Finish netting over Flamingos, among other things. The return of Polar Bears is unfortunately a fantasy in this decade and under the current Directorship. There was a rumor the dream of grandeur was to build an enclosure at the west end to capture the ocean vibe.

Additionally, the Fossa will be part of the Madagascar area that has been a debacle for over three years. The plan is to put their enclosure on the roof of the PDC (Primate Discovery Center). Sounds ridiculous to me, but in line with how things are done there. Fossa won't see that place for a couple more years I bet.

Video I took of them in short string:

Thankfully they went to FCC. They are fine there. I saw them two years ago on a paid tour. My only issue is that A) they had to live in shut areas before FCC and B) they allegedly lived together at the Denver Zoo, yet have been separated since arriving in SF.

I don't think Oakland is the solution. There are a few people, one currently working there and a couple former, who know our Zoo and its challenges.

Director Tanya Peterson has had fourteen years to do the right thing and she has failed bigtime. She didn't know anything about the Zoo going in and she still.doesn't. She is not a good leader or manager. I doubt she even likes Animals by the way she has treated them.

what is the problem with oakland ?

No problem, I think they are great. I just think that unfortunately SF has alot of challenges that need to be handled by someone who knows them, before they can fit into a formulated plan. It doesn't help that SF has been set-up by the City to fail by allowing the Zoological Soceity control.
