Is there any update on the plan to obtain pygmy hippos? One or two? From where?

Yes. The Zoo is acquiring a Male Pygmy Hippo from the San Diego Zoo. A female (not sure from where) will eventually be brought in too, as the plan is to breed them. The Hippo Habitat is currently being renovated, and the yard next to the pool has been freshly planted.
That whole section of the Zoo is under a lot of construction. The two Big Cat Grottos across from the Hippos have been combined into one larger yard, still a work in progress. On the other side of the Big Cat building there's construction undergoing to expand the Indian Rhino Exhibit into a smaller yard next door that's been empty for the last decade. Also the outside yard of the Komodo Dragon Exhibit now has a roof covering 3/4's of it. Currently it's just home to a family of Peacocks but maybe this is where the Aldabra Tortoises are going to live.

The male pygmy hippo has arrived and is on exhibit by the black rhino exhibit.

I am so glad he is there. As he probably knows his name, it would be nice not to change it.
Of course many zoos have a different name for behind the scenes than for the public.

Not sure they can exactly recognise their names, but I think some can sort of recognise the sound/pronunciation.

Tbh, I think Akobi is his full name; double names are usually only used for larger animals (elephants, gorillas ect.)

Akobi's a nice, fitting name, I do hope they keep it...

When San Diego announced his name after his birth there, it was noted that it meant first-born in the Yoruba language spoken in West Africa. That said, given the history of San Francisco to rename animals once they get there, despite any relevant meaning to their given/original name, I wouldn't doubt if he's given a new (possibly odd) name by a donor.

Or they’ll name him after a San Fransisco Giants player like they did with Tucker/Brian/Bruce.

I know this is last year's news but I wanted to provide one more update regarding their birds: as of my visit on December 12th, 2022, their South American Rainforest Aviary was closed to the avian flu.

During my trip August 24th, 2022, only their African Aviary was closed.
