It makes me wonder what happened here - he's written a rather pointed commentary to the news about how the zoo should fix its existing problems first. If he was on board originally, what happened during talks that he's now turning on the project?

I've seen some discussion re this article elsewhere online and general consensus is that SFZ has no business with the black and white bears and good riddance that it's falling through. Many people are pointing out the zoo's dilapidation and the other known issues. Apparently (I've not verified this) some people have noticed a never-ending stream of positions at SFZ slowly cycling through on the AZA job board. Which would align with the staff vocally expressing discontent with the director as has gone on for some time, along with semi-routine safety issues...

This is indicative of the resident directorship shenanigans and that the upper segment of curatorial and senior management is in her bag. I really do not understand how she and her corruptable clan can remain in place in a public institution like a City Zoo!

If the individual sat in on the Zoo Board before than probably he has a fair idea what the major issues are with the SF Zoo. It is not darn hard to rectify these and all of these go with the removal of current director and her senior inapt management. Hardly surprising that he/she has now turned on the SF Zoo proper and pulled the 20USD...!!!

The high turn-over just underlines that on-the-ground staff are severely unhappy with senior management, the direction the Zoo has been in and going in and feel that the SF Zoo is not doing what it was established for.... in the first place! What sucks even more is that the SF Municipality and City Council just seem a bunch of yay-callers and do not have the interests nor the importance of a regionally directional zoo in San Francisco.

I would use expletives de jure if I were to properly describe the director (and not bc she is a female ...., her sex does not come into it ...., it is her policies, her power-games and the fact that a lawyer is hardly the best individual to lead a public institution in the accredited AZA community. Be gone ... and take your vazals and Rasputins with you (the closest and first alley to simply improving the SF Zoo......

One of the zoo's biggest and longest time donors has now stated he will not be giving money to the zoo until there is a change in leadership. He states the zoo needs to focus on fixing up the exhibits it already has and says the overall grounds look shabby. Why would they phase out gorillas? Those are their star animals. They are the only zoo with gorillas for hundreds of miles in all directions.

Agreed, but it would be incredibly foolish for them to send out one of their star species right now. City funding is being cut across the board and I don't doubt the zoo is having to sort something out given that Cal Academy has also been forced to make budget cuts. They really can't afford to do something like sending off the gorillas.

This is just a troll website, don't believe anything they post. This was 100% an AI-generated article that is claimed to have been written by "experts". Especially because the zoo hasn't had tigers for a few years (and when they did I don't think they ever had Malayan Tigers, unless it was decades ago). There are also many other errors and bad choices for both sides on the other zoos listed in that article and the list very well looks like it used RNG and randomly picked zoos to be on this list.
