That makes sense, do you know if their current lack of a bachelor program was of hindrance to these keepers?

It wasn't to me and most of my graduating class. I graduated Aug. 2021 and received a job offer by Nov. 2021, with most of my fellow graduates receiving offers even before then. I would highly advise going through the program if you want to be in the zookeeping field.

Very cool, thanks for chiming in! Out of curiosity what facility do you work at?

That is great to hear! My experience was limited to one mid size city zoo. I thoroughly believe that 4 year degrees are highly overrated in fields where they just are not necessary, animal care being one of those fields.

How competitive is it to get accepted into the program at Santa Fe? Do you know if a lot of applicants get rejected?

On May 5th, 2022, due to avian influenza, some bird species have been moved bts while some exhibits were modified. The Florida walkthrough aviary will also be closed.

On May 7th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) Chinese muntjac named Yellow Tag Muntjac (a really creative name) passed away at age 20 due to a rapid deterioration in health in March. The zoo has not stated if there are any plans to reacquire the species.

The zoo also announced that a (1.0) Cuban Amazon parrot named Ricky passed away due to a chronic respiratory disease in April. The zoo is currently looking for a mate for their other Cuban Amazon, Lucy.

On May 18th, the zoo announced they are unveiling a new AR experience into the life of a tree kangaroo created by Handbuilt Creative in a partnership with the facility and East Carolina University. They say they are one of the first zoos in the country to use this technology (and it should be noted if you watch the video, there is a part where it shows the tree kangaroo's pouch but it looks... phallic).

I was at the zoo on Saturday. The FL aviary reopened on Friday. It is currently unknown when Roseate Spoonbill feedings will come back. Also, there is a joey Matschie's Tree Kangaroo. The zoo used to have a pair of Red-Billed Hornbills. Currently, only the male remains as the female passed away since my last visit in August. The zoo has a Key Deer on display and they now also have a Sandhill Crane that they rotate it with. The Key Deer was in the front exhibit. Two months ago a couple male Lowland Nyalas arrived at the zoo. They live in the yard with the Leopard Tortoise right next to the Visayan Warty Pigs. There is a brand new constructed back area where they hid all day and I couldn't see them. The one keeper told me they are extremely shy. The keepers also said they'd like to join the Crowned Crane yard and Nyala yard to create a large multi-species exhibit at some point in the future if they can. Other than that nothing else. I wish they'd get rid of the old gibbon cage and replace it with a new exhibit. That's enough space for a large bird or primate species.

The pair of lowland nyala are settling in well! One of the keepers discussed their past with me, evidently their enclosure at their previous home (Busch Gardens - the Tampa Bay location I assume) was right next to/under a rollercoaster, so perhaps the interstate close behind their new enclosure isn't bothering them much :p. Either way, they were hanging out in the front area in the shade.

In other news, I noticed 3 ducklings in the Florida Aviary - judging by who they are following around, I'd say they're fulvous whistling ducklings.

On a post about "Small Bussiness Saturday", there is a picture of a young wood stork kept in what looks like the Florida Aviary. The stork is not listed in the zoo's website.

So in SFTZ’s instagram story the zoo shared a wishlist of tools and enrichment items for their animals in the form of Christmas ornaments. One listing features the wood stork in question with its name being Woody.
