Saola Breeding Centre

The last Saola Working Group Annual Report 2019 and 2020 STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN FOR SAOLA CONSERVATION are published. Even though no camera trap pic and dung samples of Saola were detected, there are some positive messages, about it's presence from local informants. The Center for captive breeding of Saola will be built in Bach Ma National Park, starting (hopefuly) 2020. Breeding Centre first phase design has been presented by Julia Hanuliakova from ‘Zoo Design’ , while Radoslaw Ratajszczak and his zoo (Wroclaw) will be responsible for the administration.

Great news, even though no live saola at base!
Really nice national park.

I hope for the best, but I am afraid the lack of observations, dung or other direct records means that Saola has became extinct. Which shows how quickly poaching works. Perhaps, as an immediate solution, if existence of a live Saola would be detected, the area should immediately be protected by hired anti-poaching security guards.

A quite recent expedition saw a Saola, so they are likely not extinct just yet.

Cant comment on the breeding centre but there is a good and relatively recent podcast on Saola on the mammal watching forum New Podcast Episode: Bill Robichaud & The Saola – Mammal Watching

been a while since i listened but essentially there have been none sighted by researchers or camera trapped since the early 2010's if i recall correctly.

Some alleged sightings still being reported by locals at time of podcast though.

might be of interest to you and others, enjoy!

I hope this is another Attenborough's Echidna situation...
It's still out there, just uncommon and lives in a vast and rugged habitat

Attenborough's Long-beaked Echidna was thought to be extinct for decades before being rediscovered in an incredibly remote area.
Size matters ... here!

Echidna is a tas smaller than a large mammal like the saola.

TBH: I do find all the efforts commendable, but my personal perception and take on the saola is that the species is EXTINCT.

I still find it fascinating it managed to hide in this area this long...much political activity in Laos and Vietnam during 20th century but wasn't seen until the 1990s
